Help me understand The End, plz**SPOILERS**

ok, perhaps im gettin old, but in many latest movies i cant understand the ending.. this is one of them. The movie ends with the "doc" gettin to the town... i understand none of u really knows what happened next, i can even understand that its not that important, but i really feel that an absence of a solid ending really hurt overall expirience.. take the dead fish in the end, the fish was suppose to show how much oxigen they have left.. so on one hand they survived, coz the doc told ppl about the exident, but on the other hand the fish is dead and the end is very dramatic....
if anybody could just tel me how he or she understood the ending i would be really thankful..

p.s. exuse my english...

I think the fish never died, but i'm not sure.
I think it was one of the best endings ever, doc (ukrainian) sings the children's song for good luck, a very striking and disturbing scene, exits on the surface screaming, then swims to the shore half-conscious, and with the last inch of strength climbs over the ridge, once he sees the town, there's nothing more to say.
The sub is trapped at 72 metra, it's just above the decompression limit. they are so close to the surface, to the town, to freedom, yet they are confined and doomed within the reach of the whole navy.

I thin an average person can actually free-dive to about 30m.

Well, I don't think the fish died either, but let's just presume that if it did, it was because of cold salty water. The idea of such an ending, I believe, is to give the viewer a hope that the crew has some chance to survive and in fact be rescued, but not to make just a stupid happy-end. Why? Let me explain.
First of all, in the scene in HQ near the end of the film: two generals in fact found out where the boat could have been. Which means they could have sent a party to check the place. They have enough time, because it is shown in the very ending of the film, in the logbook, that the survivors have enough oxygen for 12 hours.
Furthermore, they didn't let the doc go just because of mercy. It was told there: "When you're out, attach the safety hook to the- there'll be a ring on the hulk, like this. Make sure you do, or else you and all us are doomed". Doc released the buoy which would help to locate the sub.
And, the in the very ending of the film we see the base, which is filling with the lights. The lights might be turning on because of the evening, or because the base is alarmed (by doc, for example) that the sunk sub is somewhere near.
So, the happy endng is quite possible. Though... 12 hours is not that much, you know. We had bloody much time to save fellows in Kursk... and see what we got in the end.

So I agree, the film's ending is magnificent because it isn't obvious.

They didn't survive i guess too,

1) is about the dead fish...

2) He looked on the watch, and wrote down 12 hours of oxigen left... Well the alarm is to wake up the people... So it will be 6 oclock in the morning, so the crew allready runed out of oxigen...
