what's with the unusable items?

There were many occasions in Sanitarium where I'd pick up an item, and then never use it. One example is in the Aztec chapter, within the Water Temple, theres a red coloured fish . I pick it up, but I never use it anywhere, its simply in my pocket til the end of the chapter. And once I get to the next chapter, it dissappears.

So I'm wondering, what is up with with these items? If you can't use them anywhere and they eventually poof out of existence, whats their purpose? I'm guessing if you manage to collect all of them you unlock something. As cool as it may be, I doubt it though...

I don't remember exactly but it is possible that you can complete a chapter without doing everything you can in it, maybe you missed some place or character that could have told you something but it wasn't necessary to do it to complete the chapter.

Haven't played Sanitarium in quite a while, so I don't remember the bit you're talking about. However, could it be possible that this is a....red herring? Seriously, you know they always put in-jokes in adventure games....

Yeah, it's an in-joke.

There's a "Red Herring" painted on a hut in the village full of deformed children too. When the character goes in and sees nothing he goes "And I thought I would find some clues in here!"

Also remember the sailor in the asylum dancing with the red fish. (Another in-joke)

The red fish is the only thing that you cannot use in the entire game. If you take it to the fisherman's wife in the village, she will tell you that it is useless.
