Dakuan - Different portrayal?

Anyone else think Dakuan's portrayel in the TV series didn't reflect how he was in the original movie?

In the movie he was a sly old goat who used his manipulative skills to manage Jubei and Kagero's destinies and use them in his mission against the Kimon. Dakuan was also very ruthless and always had his eye on the task at hand, like when he tries to deter Jubei from rescuing Kagero from Shijima.

I think his JP voice made him sound even more of a bumbling geezer. I believe Dwight Schultz (aka Howling Mad" Murdock from the A-Team) in the English dub conveyed Dakuan better verbally. But even with that, I still think Dakuan's portrayal in the TV series didn't match my perception of him from the movie.

The only real time I can think of him showing his cunning side was when in the last episode it turns out he was just faking being controlled by the female Kimon and thus managed to save himself and Jubei from the volcano.

It could be because on the 10th Anniversary Edition Ninja Scroll DVD, Yoshiaki Kawajiri speaks of the TV series and Ninja Scroll 2. He mentions in regards to the former that he was giving his staff more freedom with it. So perhaps that is why Dakuan wasn't portrayed as accurately. Although it could be that 14 years on, Dakuan is starting to become a little senile?

It seems to me though that for sentimental reasons connected to the original movie, Dakuan was more or less just a cameo really. He had no real significance to the plot and his agenda was more or less nonexistent.

Does anyone agree with me?

Also in the original he was a government spy, which I felt really gave the story a bit more dimension to it since the official government was involved, and showed they weren't exactly all incompetents.

In the series it seems that all he is is a greedy priest. Still I like the fact he was in there anyway.
