Herbie / Maggie's win in the final race felt cheap

I felt this was poorly handled in the movie really; but since Herbie can't really match Trip's stock car speed (the one Trip let's Maggie take for a ride and she gets all exited about), then they have to make Trip have an accident in the car so that Herbie can win.

It would have been better if Herbie had won a straight race against that car due to the build up / rivalry that was set up (Herbie getting jealous/sad about Maggie riding and wanting Trip's car and such).

What do you mean? Herbie actually matched and was about to pass the speed of Tripe's stock car, it was because of this that Trip got all crazy and started ramming his car on Herbie.

See this clip from the movie (not a good quality) where what I am saying happens:

Herbie would have won fair and square had Trip not gotten all crazy.

It actually wasn't going to pass Trip's car, they only got the win because Trip didn't focus on the race and was distracted and so crashed his car. In a fair and straight race Herbie would have been left in the dust.

I agree, I recently watched it and that was rather disappointing about the movie. Their victory on the final race felt cheap and unearned. Would have been much better if Herbie and Maggie had actually won the race straight against Trip. As it is it just feels like pure luck.

Sounds like this movie served as an allegory for Lohan's rise to fame

Basically, yeah...lol

Agreed, if I had my way the movie would end with Trip actually winning the race and then make it end in a positive note about how you should be happy with what you having Herbie and a bond with it meant much more than winning a race or winning Trip's stock car.

Otherwise yeah, it would have been better if they had won the race fair and square.
