share"True story"? No. Eddie's character is based on a relative of Albom's, an uncle I believe. And I think the picture is of his uncle. But it would be pretty difficult for this movie to be based on a true story, what with all of the post-mortem content.
shareI think the poster was asking if the author's uncle Eddie lived a life similar to story-Eddie's, i.e. the war experience, the pier maintenance, etc...
shareI believe the picture in the back of the book was of Morrie, from his other true story novel Tuesday's wiith Morrie.

'This book is dedicated to Edward Beitchman, my beloved uncle, who gave me my first concept of heaven. Every year, around the Thanksgiving table, he spoke of a night in the hospital when he awoke to see the souls of his departed loved ones sitting on the edge of the bed, waiting for him. I never forgot that story. And I never forgot him.
Everyone has an idea of heaven, as do most religions, and they should all be respected. The version represented here is only a guess, a wish, in some ways, that my uncle, and others like him - people who felt unimportant here on earth - realize, finally, how much they mattered and how they were loved.'
That's interesting, there's no such statement at the start of my copy of the book. At the end there's just a comment something like: For my Uncle so-and-so, the real Eddie.

Yes. A couple of the 'dead' people in the movie were actually brought back to life after their 'near death' experience. Since all stories agreed with each other it is assumed they couldn't have all had the same dream and it was determined to be a true story.
They didn't all agree on the number of people we meet in heaven, but that was explained away with maybe some were brought back to life before they met their five people.
Believe what you will of it.
