Uwe Boll INTERVIEW on Internet Bashing (includes SURVEY)

Hi IMDb,

I produced a video with Uwe Boll in which I interviewed him about getting bashed on the Internet. You can find the video on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBJhEeQI2KE

The interview is part of my master thesis on Internet Bashing, which I'm currently writing at the University of Augsburg, Germany.

I want to include as many opinions on the subject as possible. You can help me understand the Internet community's view on Uwe Boll by taking this short survey:

http://bscw.uni-augsburg.de/survey/index.php?sid=88

The anonymous survey runs from January 25th to February 7th, 2010. It takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. The questions are targeted to both registered members and unregistered users of YouTube. JavaScript must be enabled in order for the survey tool to work correctly.

Best regards,

Do we get to know any of the results?

Thanks for asking, h3lblad3! I'll update my personal blog jan-mathis.schnurr.de with an excerpt of the results this week.

So according to you, the reason that so many people say that his movies suck and that Uwe is a terrible director is mostly because of group mentality and because gamers don't like the fact that the one directing the movies based on their favorite video games is not a gamer himself?
Couldn't it simply be that his movies suck, and that he is a terrible director? I'm not a gamer, and before I watched "Alone In The Dark" I had never even heard of the guy, but I still thought that movie was the worst case of cinematic torture I had ever encountered, only equalled a short time later by "BloodRayne".
I admit that Postal was slightly better than those two pieces of horse manure, but still a long way off from being watchable. After Postal I gave up on trying, because I felt I had already wasted enough hours of my life on not being entertained by this director.

I understand that for a German like yourself it's probably hard to criticize a fellow German director, just like most Dutch people don't like to criticize Paul Verhoeven (who's definitely made some stinkers as well), but you can't actually think that most of his movies are good, or even passable, can you???
Perhaps you can. God knows the rest of the world can't understand the taste in music you and your fellow countrymen have either (Schlagers, Scooter, Modern Talking, etc.).

In conclusion: I strongly disagree with the conclusion of your dissertation. It may perhaps explain a part of the Uwe Boll bashing going on on-line, but the cheap excuses such like group mentality you put forward are not enough to explain why he is nearly uniformly disliked by everyone outside of Germany, among gamers and non-gamers, among IMDb-members and non-IMDb-members, among movie-snobs and action-movie-lovers, etc., etc. The ONLY logical conclusion is that he makes movies which do not conform to what the vast majority of movie-watchers around the world consider to be "good". Period.

reply

The only logical conclusion is that Uwe Boll makes bad films because he understands that it's quick cash, and i'm pretty sure that he himself has said that he doesn't care.

But the quick cash ideal can only last so long, he's getting a terrible repuation, although thoroughly earned and maintained, and sooner or later, enough people are going to boycott him completely and he won't be able to justify making films anymore.

And on a personal note, I think he's bl**dy awful, he's out to p*ss the world off, one movie sh*tty at a time! That's not just me speaking as a gamer, I've come to expect sub-par representations of my favourite titles, but as a movie goer, these are beyond comprehension as to just how bad they are.

The last title of his I saw was In The Name Of The King: A Dungeon Siege Tale... Just how in all that is right with the world, did Uwe Boll get all these decent actors/acctresses to sign up?!? I can only assume there was date rape drugs involved, and even then, with torture devices on top of that! I'm going to end this rant here, but be in no doubt, the guy is not worth the oxygen he wastes by breathing!!!

reply

Well, if he doesn't care about his films, or if you want to call them that, why did he decide to go raging Boll on a few critics? Because they criticized and butchered his films that he doesn't care about? Or is Boll just a lying, hypocritical scum bag with a camera. He hasn't made a single watchable film yet, and i gave up on him after Dungeon Siege. He had everything to make a decent epic; big name actors, budget, longer shooting periods, and flushed down the drain.

reply

You made some good points, but I can assure you, that most german movie viewers dislike Uwe Boll just as much as the rest of the world does.
I do, everyone I know and have ever talked movies does.
There is quality cinema coming from Germany, Michael Haneke as an example. Don't want to bore by naming them all though. But there def is.
As for the music, we widely listening to the same stuff as the rest of the world.
There is Schlagers, Modern Talking and stuff, ok, but the US got tons of awful country style music, (next to pretty good stuff), the Hasselhoff, Miley and the Jonas Brothers, Barry Manillow, a bunch of really bad singing Hollywood actors to name but a few. There is simple people with simple tastes all over the world, and they need to be fed with easy entertainement. As long as it pays.

but isn't hasselhoff beloved in your country? come on, lowrises, don't turn your back on the hoff! he needs you!

reply

you right docia:
We love the Hoff and we all him dear, when all others fail him. He gives us America pure, raw and stripped from all superficiality. Drinking for the joy of drinking and singing for the joy of singing.
I've been looking for freedom!!!
What more can a man ask for ;)

reply

i'm glad you and your brethren have embraced the hoff. he needs a good home.

reply

Hasselhoff as a singer is popular only in Germay!

Americans didnt even know the Hoff was trying to be a musician/singer till we all learned Germans LOVED him

reply

Further to previous comments... gamers don't like him because he takes a popular game and cuts all but the basic concept and still has the hide to say it has anything to do with the game.

Seriously, I had hopes for Far Cry (despite a German Jack Carver) pretty much till he reached the island... then it didn't just go downhill, it ran right off a cliff.

Your conclusions border on ludicrous IMO.... his movies are cheap, exploitative (usually exploiting popularity someone else has created) and often downright awful.
