Zano's family
I was reading Wikipedia's synopsis of the film, and it reads that Zano's family was exiled to Algeria... but, since we all have to take Wikipedia articles with a grain of salt, I thought I'd ask here. What did you guys think his family history was? I thought he and his family were pieds noirs, and had been exiled from Algeria during the revolution. When he went to his old family home, it was a very nice building, and the furniture looked European.... plus, wasn't his last name "Boulanger" or something? And the women were telling him about how his family hadn't been able to take most of their belongings since they were pretty much chased out of the country. So, I was thinking, they went back to France, and probably hadn't been able to re-integrate with French society (as the French don't consider the pieds-noirs French, even though they were the descendants of French settlers in Algeria, who only married other French people... and from what I understand, they basically lived a European lifestyle in Algeria, although I may be wrong about this). And Naima's family actually was of Algerian descent...
so, while Zano might be considered French (by any Algerian, and by most people who aren't prejudiced against the pieds noirs), and Naima too (since she was born and raised in France, and barely felt any connection to her Algerian heritage), they were on the periphery of French society because the French didn't consider them to be French.... however in Algeria, they were considered French (Zano because he wasn't of Algerian descent, and Naima because she wasn't Algerian in terms of cultural attitudes and mindset), and thus they were effectively exiles in both places.
That's my theory, but I did see the movie a few months ago. Does anyone think his family was exiled to Algeria? Why?
