Huge GAP in the storyline.

Ok so Michelle was raped by her stepfather at 12 but what happened AFTER that?? Was she sent to live somewhere else?? At the altar before she killed her stepfather she acted like that was her first time seeing him since the rape. Did I miss something? Was there an explanation on her life between 12 to 24?

In the novel of the same name, Reggie sexually abuses Michelle many times between the ages of 12 and 19 or whenever the age she moved out of her mama's house. When she does see him at the altar, it's like she has has a flashback of when he first raped her at 12, but she was abused many times after that.
