Any Elisabeth Elliot Devotees Out There?

She is a GIANT of the faith! I love her writings, from her books to her newsletter, and I have learned so much from her! Her message hasn't changed from the first stroke of her pen in the jungle to the last words she typed on her PC at home, and I think she is an anchor for many believers in a changing world. They still look to her (at 80 years of age!) for Biblical answers and advice.

Go on, Girl!! Long live Elisabeth Elliot!

You're not going crazy. It's coming to you!

I know you're out there! You love EE, & you love her books! You're a closet EE freak! Where are you?

I think she's creepy. Talk about a seemingly sexually repressed and cold woman...

She befriended & evangelized the man who killed her husband. Do you think that's cold?

Sexually repressed? Such a negative connotation? Why?

She does have extremely conservative views about sex that she bases on numerous Biblical principles. But they are to a purpose-- to honor God & guard the heart.

There's probably not more than a handful of people who would agree with that statement b/c most of us think that sex is the most liberating, fulfilling endeavor that one can share with another (or with one's self).

But to each his/her own. How is it that you are familiar with her?

I was a christian for over 10 years. Got to listen to her on the radio as well as being exposed to a few of her writings during college. Didn't much like her then, either. Think she's the epitome of legalistic and self-flagellating christian women.

If it floats your boat to think that sex is anything more than a biological process that produces both pleasure and reproduction, that's great. But I think it's ultimately harmful and leads people (especially women) to view themselves in needlessly shameful ways.

Well, I personally have several "philosphies" about sex that extend far beyond just pleasure and procreation, but I won't bore you with them.

But I think it's ultimately harmful and leads people (especially women) to view themselves in needlessly shameful ways.

I do think that some of her ideas are way too restrictive, but I understand her basis for them.

I don't think she views sex as shameful or negative in itself. I think she presents it like I would think a reformed alcoholic would discuss liquor at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting-- "just don't go there."

She receives mounds of letters from people who have been burned too often by going too far, & her rule of thumb is simple-- "just don't go there." Just my opinion.

Did you go to a Bible School or a Christian liberal arts college?

Neither. I went to a well known, respected and VERY secular University. That, and the fact that I wasn't indoctrinated at a young age, are two reasons I think I came out healthy on the other side. I remained a christian through college and even went into full-time ministry for a few years. But I knew how to think critically and when I really examined my faith, it crumbled.

I had the chance to hear Elisabeth Elliott speak years ago. She's a very strong woman. She has done well with the role that was placed upon her to glorify God. Indeed, the faith of the wives of the slain missionaries was just as strong as the men themselves.

Well said, Bill. The guys were probably more aware of the dangers they were facing than they made privy to their wives.

But wow!! What an amazing story!! She evangelized the man who killed her husband! Amazing mercy! Amazing Grace! Praise God!

Thanks for your response. She's stopped makiong speaking engagements.

There will never be another like her!

I've made smarter things than you by eating fiber.
