This is Just an Updated Version of Logan's Run

Is it me, or is this movie basically Logan's Run? Live a few years in perfect harmony and go on Carousel I mean to the Island. Unless you and Jessica escape and eventually free all of the others? The only real difference is the organ harvesting/child bearing aspect. Still enjoyed it though. Love Steve Buscemi!

I saw Logan's Run a long time ago and there are certainly a lot of elements that appear similar to it in The Island. Ironically according to IMDB Trivia the producers were sued by some other guy who made this cheap little 1979 film called The Clonus Horror who won a seven figure settlement from The Island's producers. May be the Logan's Run producers should try to get a slice of the pie as well.

reply

What pie? I didn't even make it's filming budget back at the box office.

reply

In a legal settlement I don't think box office performance of a given film has little to do with the court's findings. As mentioned, the producers of The Clonus Horror apparently walked away with a tidy seven figure sum.🐭

The only similarities between this and Logan's run is that a man and a woman escape a high tech world and are hunted.

In Logan's Run, they KNOW they are scheduled to die, no questions.

In The Island, they think that they are a bunch of disaster survivors.

That marks the biggest difference between the movies. LR relies on the people knowing and cooperating to keep world populations down, and keep the young people in charge, there are no organ harvests, no clones, no real deception(Except that life isn't as sunny as you think it is when you are not allowed to age).

This would be like saying that Spider Man and Superman are similar because they happen to be superhero movies.

Wow! World shattering news! How did I miss that!

"In Logan's Run, they KNOW they are scheduled to die, no questions."

Actually they are also deceived and led to believe they have a chance at renewal when they go to carousel apparently in an attempt to maintain moral and keep control while secretly controlling population within the dome.

"In The Island, they think that they are a bunch of disaster survivors."

In Logan's Run they are disaster survivors, or at least genetic offspring of survivors and are also being misled by the conditions on the outside.

There are some other similarities but I see it more as a Logan's Run / Coma hybrid rather than a LR ripoff.

Though I Wander I Am Not Lost...

There's more similarities than that:

They're are led to believe the world is poisoned and there's no survival outside.

People question whether The Island or The Carousel are a new life.

They're completely inexperienced about what the world is like and both movies make a point of seeing the Sun the first time.

They return and free everyone.

I keep wondering why nobody mentions the boat's name: "Renovatio", which means "renewal", hence another allusion to Logan's Run. I can't shake the feeling that Bay & Co. basically could have made a remake of Logan's Run, but decided to write a similar story that offered the same dramatic and staging opportunities AND makes the story their own intellectual property. Simple reasons: money and vanity. By the way, I had the same thought watching Cameron's The Abyss back in 1989, after having read Michael Crichton's Sphere. I couldn't shake the feeling that The Abyss was heavily inspired by the book (which had not been made into a film at the time). To me it felt like Cameron thought "Oh brilliant basic idea, but I'm gonna write something like that myself." Same reasons as stated above. Just a thought.

reply

Cameron did the exact same thing with dances with wolves.
it added twists to the story, placed it in space and told the world that he had this idea so long ago but it was technologically impossible to achieve at such time. However, technological impossibility didn't stop him to make Terminator.
Our world is crawling with such people who inject mistrust. No wonder the computer in terminator wanted us dead. It was exposed to James Cameron

Lincoln 6 Echo is a much more innocent character than Logan the Sandman. Logan's and Jordan's innocence is a big issue all the way through.

Calling disagreement hate is childish.

reply

And a couple more similarities- They could get away but come back to free everyone else. The place falls apart. The end scene with everyone coming out into the real world is very much like Logan's Run.

reply

I think the film is largely based on a book called Spares.

reply

Had to stop what I was doing to come here and say what a ridiculous film this is....

reply

you're wrong.

Island is a remake of THX 1138
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066434/

reply

I can see where you get the idea but the premise of The Island is to keep rich, spoilt people alive at the expense of the clones whereas Logan's Run was to have EVERYONE die by 21 (30 in the film)
I quite enjoyed Logan's Run but this film was better.

Oh gravity, thou art a heartless bitch!

reply

It definitely is, but your phrasing suggests this is a bad thing. I am positive that the makers of the movie were not only aware of the similarities, but were actively trying to make an "updated" version of this well respected movie. I think they did a great job and considering that this movie full of CGI and is far more of an action movie than Logan's Run, I think it is interesting that it somehow less far fetched.

reply

Who cares? Logan's Run was a good movie.
