Another movie my opinion changed on as i got older

i find this happening quite a lot lately, A history of Violence and Heat used to be the movies for me that only other people liked, we all have those movies that everyone loves for reasons we don't understand but for me something changed, i rewatched Heat after years of disliking it and now i absolutely love it, it's now one of my all time favourites, i reckon it was because i was too young to really appreciate it, despite being a devout cinephile my entire life.

after that happened i wondered if the same would happen with A history of violence, and it did, although a little differently, Heat became one of my favourites and while my opinion of history of violence is now positive, i feel like something's missing, i want to love it, but i only "like" it, and it isn't a mystery why, the only scene i think is a mistake is the second overall, when the little girl wakes up from a nightmare and the whole family comes in one at a time to comfort her, i don't know if i just don't like the little girl's acting or that i don't think the lines are particularly great, i have no idea what it is but that's the only scene i can't stand, everything else i don't know why i didn't see the greatness earlier and the film comes soooooooooooo close to being perfect except for that one scene it's really frustrating.

anyone have any thoughts on that?

It was kind of cliched, but I think that is exactly what they wanted to show us. They wanted to introduce us to the live of a very normal, loving family.

And thanks for the reminder on Heat, will definitely rewatch it soon.

Btw, have you seen Eastern Promises yet? Looks similar.

reply

i have seen Eastern Promises, rather good, i think that minimalist camera behaviour Cronenberg seems to like detracts from the atmosphere a little bit but it's a good concept with good acting and that fight scene… damn.

reply

Thanks, sounds good. I'll watch it this afternoon.

Love Croneberg's old-school minimalist directing style that never gets in the way of the story he's trying to tell. I wish more movies were filmed this way.

That scene was a little clunky but it was meant to introduce the Stalls and how tight the family unit was. And Tom assured his young daughter that monsters didnt exist but shortly after a series of "monsters" were introduced into their cosy lives. "They came out of my closet and and then they were in the shadows." It was a heavy-handed metaphor for Tom's past.
