Oscar Nom for Hurt

Honestly, how could William Hurt possibly get an Oscar nomination for this? He was in the movie for like 10 minutes, and yes he was good, but Mortensen was waaaay better. In my opinion, he deserved the nomination. Even Ashton Holmes and Ed Harris were better. William Hurts performance in this movie is so overrated...

10 highly effective, memorable minutes. But I basically agree that Harris was even more outstanding. The biggest sh-t of all though... Mortensen should have won the best actor over PSHoffman's Capote - he was THAT ferociously phenomenal.

Idk, but for me it wasn't memorable :/

Just finished watching the movie and like you said, he is on screen less than 10 minutes and has a few lines, nothing bad with his acting but nothing memorable either. I guess it was just a bad year and there wasn't much to choose from.

I think Hollywood's been trying to reignite Hurt's career for thirty years now. When he came out in the early '80s, I thinked they envisioned an actor on par with Brando or Deniro. Although he's done respectable work... never a big box office draw.

reply

Because Hunt was Supporting actor so therefore it was easier for a nomination.

Ed Harris deserved a nomination instead, he was brilliant.

I actually feel this was one of Harris' best performances. He's truly chilling in the movie. Hurt was amusing but seemed to belong in another film. It feels mean to say it with Hurt having just passed, but I'd have given his nomination to Harris.

reply

I agree. In fact, I thought Hurt kind of hammed it up. He chewed the scenery in a movie where everyone else was very serious.

That's what made it so great though. Hurt could do no wrong and totally outclassed Mortensen in that sequence. But I do see it questionable for getting an Oscar nomination, since he was no Viola Davis. Then again, quite a few of the non-big award ceremonies nominated him.
