blood on the sheets?

I didnt understand what the girl did when she went into the bathroom, did she just cut herself, cause she seemed to be in a lot of pain, and i didnt see a cut anywhere, does anybody know what she did?

reply

Spoilers:
Since she was at that age when women first start menstruating,.....do I need to go on?

I don't mean to impose, but I am the OCEAN.

reply

I'm pretty sure she went in there to tear her hymen.

reply

That's what I figured. She must have penetrated herself somehow.

reply

My guess too... :)

reply

WHAT?? NOOOOO!
At least I hope not, that would be awful! I thought she cut herself in the hand, I don't think there was any hint that she did what you said (I'm not even going to say it)! But - on the other hand - it would fit into the movie, wouldn't it?

Call me Joe...or Stallion, whatever, I don't mind...

reply

Well I just rented this movie when I saw the trailer for it and I have to say its shocking and draining on a person. As for you question about the sheet. Some are you say she is a Virgin but I have to think that she was not when she me Kevin Kline the reason is that before they came to the house they stop on a dirt road and was sold to the old white guy. They went to the field. And if you remember when she was in the shower, she was crying and remember she was having a nightmare in the van when she was clawing.

reply

As far as I could tell, all the old guy got was a blow job. Manuelo made it clear she had to stay a virgin. That would be enough to send an innocent child to the brink of a mental breakdown. And as for the blood on the sheets, maybe she tore her hymen or cut herself with a razor...but since she spoke only broken english, I wonder if she would've understood it. Also, being an innocent 13-year old, would she have known the significance of blood on the sheets? It confused me.

reply

You are right about the blow job part, the director talks about in the DVD features.

In another hand, it is not impossible for her to know about the significance of the bloody sheets.

You guys are so naieve.

reply

She was a virgin when she got to New Jersey (Manuolo made sure of that).
She tore her hymen in the bathroom because she understood that she could not be a virgin anymore or she & the old guy would not be able to leave. As to why she didn't cut her hand...she's 13..she doesn't really understand what's going on, and she reasons like a child, she is not clever like Veronica. What she did is made clearer at the end of the movie when she's afraid to go to her mother in church, bc she's no longer a virgin, she thinks her mother will reject her. But her brother convinces her that it's ok.

reply

Maybe she tore her hymen? Are you all men who are speculating on this who don't have a clue? Give me a break. She cut her hand.

reply

I am not a guy! I watched the movie again last night. She did not have any visible cut ON her hand. Also when she came out of the bathroom she was hunched over and in pain. I think the movie leaves it ambiguous enough so that the viewer can infer what they want. I just thought she cut her hymen bc of how she acts in the church with her mother.

reply

Should have showed it. End.

reply

what? even the director said it's supposed to imply that she tore her hymen. I think you are not that smart.

reply

You are speculating. There is no logical reason for her to have cut her hand. And if she had it would have been shown. She did have a reason to tear her hymen - although that would be misguided as she would still be a virgin.

reply

"Also, being an innocent 13-year old, would she have known the significance of blood on the sheets? It confused me. "

I imagine she would. It's quite well known in a number of cultures. In some cultures the blooded sheet is hung out of the window on the wedding night. In some cultures (for example), a boy may take a girl away for the night and return with blooded sheets. This shows that he has 'made her his wife'. The women may then do tests to see if it is really human blood.

reply

Maybe the old guy ignored him and fucker her anyway and the blood was because of the deviginilization.

reply

Watched the movie for the first time, very draining. my feeling on the girl is she had oral sex with the old man in the field. Also feel she penetrated herself to get that much blood.

reply

I guess OP is underage, and you guys probably shouldn't educate OP.

wow, what a long discussion over what she did, and in details, i checked this one out to see if it could get any as retarded as the title, and yes it did, with a huge contribution from others...

yes you would think Kev would step in and help her out a bit, poor girl having to cut her hand like that...still the nice lady downstairs will fix her up with a band aid for a few extra dollars...

I agree that she probably broke her own hymen. Based on the way she was walking and the horrified reaction of Kline's character, it seems pretty clear. And perhaps she also thought that if they were to doubt that sex took place, and if she were "inspected", she would pass and be allowed to leave. It seems logical for a scared thirteen-year-old in these circumstances to think along these lines.

oh god, are you serious? not all women bleed when her hymen are penetrated through, and not all women even have a hymen. however, most do on both accounts and if your theory can be considered valid, I have a much higher probability of being right than you do.

reply

Yeah, it's implied that she tore her hymen. The problem is, though, that it's basically a myth; it doesn't happen the way it's portrayed in films/TV, and I think adults of Manuelo's and Laura's age should know that.

When there IS bleeding after sex for the first/first few times, there isn't that much blood, and it shouldn't be dark.

I know this because I'm female and...that's all I'll say.

Anyway...despite the unrealistic parts of this movie, I still enjoyed it. More films exposing the world of human trafficking should be made. AND, Kevin Kline is great. The poisonous look he gave to Laura after she called him a nice daddy? Badass.

reply

I'm also a woman, I also believe she tore her own hymen for the blood and also for the purposes of passing an 'inspection'. I felt like that wasmade pretty clear, but maybe that's just me.

As to the amount of blood on her hands, I hate to play the gender card, but maybe it's because the director's a dude and he had no idea how much blood there was supposed to be? Because it's true that not everyone bleeds, and I dunno what the hell she'd have had to do to herself to produce that much blood. Maybe no one did their research? Or maybe cinematically they thought dark blood like that would pack more of a visual punch. As a woman, though, I went "huh" a little bit when I saw it, even though I was pretty certain what she'd done.

reply

I am pretty sure the movie meant to imply that she tore her 'hymen' in there.

This annoyed me to no end.
The truth is the so-called hymen is a myth. Most women don't 'tear' down there when they are penetrated for the first time, most don't even bleed. I didn't. None of my friends did. Usually when women bleed from penetration it's because the man was too forceful or the woman wasn't 'ready' for him, as in not excited and lubricated enough. Also, it's possible that sometimes the blood is mistaken to come from the vagina when in fact it could have come from the MAN. The frenulum can tear in some men and cause some bleeding. Not common, but it happens.

The hymen myth is a long-standing fairy tale, prevalent in a lot of cultures, and it's sole purpose is to oppress women sexually, divide them into 'pure' and 'unclean' and shame women that have sex before marriage.
In a lot of cultures the families of a newly wed couple request to see the bloodstained sheets after the wedding night as 'proof' that the woman was indeed a virgin up until getting married. The problem is that in many of these cultures the bride is given 'fake blood' to put on the sheets, because everyone knows that most women won't bleed their first time, but it is so ingrained into the culture that a virgin must bleed that they keep up the charade. It's quite ridiculous.

I believe there have been studies where doctors have examined the vaginas of little girls and compared them to that of grown, sexually active women and nowhere has anyone been able to present conclusive proof of a hymen. People don't even seem to know what exactly a hymen is. A lot of people think it's actually a thin lamina covering the entire vagina entry, which is impossible of course, how would the period blood be able to come out? Some believe it's a flap of skin covering a part of the hole.
But the truth is, no one can show a real photo of a hymen and show histological difference between a 'virgin' hymen and a torn one.

Sorry for the rant. I just die a little inside everytime I see people that still believe in that old-fashioned myth.

reply

I didn't think it was meant to imply that she tore her own hymen. First off, she was supposed to be very naive and innocent, so it's unlikely she would have even known to do that. Second, she put the blood on the sheets with her hand print, not by bleeding on the bed. It seemed to me that she cut herself with something in the bathroom thinking that blood on the bed wold fool them but she didn't realize that a bloody hand print wouldn't work because again, she was naive about that stuff.

Conform or be cast out
