Oscar Wilde reference?

Is the title a reference to Dorian Gray? I'd be pretty surprised if it weren't, but don't know for sure. I mean, Gray is also a classicly depressing color, and Dorian isn't a very common name...

reply

yeah. i'd bet a lot of money on the title being an oscar wilde reference.

reply

Yeah, does anyone know what "Lagatos" means?

In 1963 an avante-garde musician named LaMonte Young wrote songs called "Dorian's Blues in G", "19 X 63 NYC fifth day of the hammer Bb Dorian Blues", and "B Dorian Blues".

I don't think there's much relationship between this movie and Oscar Wilde's book, so I am wondering if the movie's title is based on one of the songs. The song titles, of course, could very well be references to Wilde.

The "dorian" in Young's "Dorian's Blues in G" derives it's name from dorian mode scale.

And this...
"From the early ‘60s, the Dorian mode has been one of Young’s tonal resources, providing the basis for Young’s Dorian Blues in G..."

OK as far as the Dorian Mode scale goes, is it named after Oscar Wilde's novel? Someone else's turn to research.

My two cents is I don't think the writer / directors of this film have ever heard of LaMonte Young.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorian_mode) the Dorian Mode got its name from the Greek tribe of the same name, which is also where Oscar got the name for his character.

Ta-da!

So it all goes into a nice little circle.

I heard the director speak tonight and he did mention the oscar wilde character.

reply

Neat.

Where did you here the director speak? And what did he say?

reply

The character is reading The Picture of Dorian Grey in the scene where he meets Ben, so I'd guess the Oscar Wilde reference is intentional, yes.
