Well I will reply after 15 years. Not much activity on this board (this film has been criminally unwatched).
Here is my take. He was fine with his routine life. Then he fell in love. If he never fell in love, he gets the case back and deposits it.
Since he fell in love, he was planning on taking his life back. Was going to try and run away with the girl and money. He called to tell the story that the two guys took the case. They would have definitely blamed him if he just dissappeared.
Since she never showed up. He gave up and went with the 'brave extraordinary' death.
Great movie.
