Pink Floyd on the List

Don't get me wrong; I love Pink Floyd. But why were they on the list? They most certainly are not hard rock; they are the very essence of psychedelic rock. Same with the Doors.

If it's a hard rock list, why don't they put only hard rock bands?

Although I agree with you on most of your points, I differ here: I consider The Doors to be a blues-rock band, not psychedelic. And yes, I love both bands but I don't consider either "hard rock." The reason that they were there was probably because of how iconic and influencial they were to rock n roll in general, which does stray from the list's main purpose, but I think it can be forgiven.

reply

Yeah, I guess so. But how is it that Pink Floyd were ahead of artists like Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper and Deep Purple??

That I don't have an answere to. And I do like Pink Floyd more than those other three, but I agree with you that on a list of hard rock artists they should be lower than them.

Because Pink Floyd kicks Deep Purple's asses. Cooper shouldn't be too far ahead of them. Ozzy, on a technicality was in Black Sabbath which got spot number 2. Pink Floyd is great. I think tehy got the right spot on the list when you look at who beat them. (Except for Metallica...)

reply

I disagree.

Pink Floyd may not be defined by their hard rock material, but they rocked hard with the best of 'em. I dare you to check out "The Nile Song" and "Ibiza Bar" - the earliest performances of grunge rock ever! Plus kick-ass hard rock songs such as Not Now John & Young Lust, they get pretty heavy.

The Doors, especailly for their time, brought a heck of a lot of bombast and heaviness to their music that is rarely seen. The kind of screaming Jim does and John's frantic drum fills, those aspects are totally hard rock. With powerhouses like Five To One, Been Down So Long, You Make Me Real, and Roadhouse Blues I think they can qualify as hard rock.

Plus it's VH1... unfortunately they're going to go with big names and rarely delve into deeper territories... Not that I don't adore seeing stuff about Floyd and The Doors, which I absolutely do.

reply

I understand all of this very well, but against bands and artists such as Ozzy Osbourne and Deep Purple, they don't belong so high up if they mean to put them in order according to hard rock-ability.
Young Lust does get heavy and is an awesome song, but look at Osbourne's Crazy Train, Suicide Solution or Paranoid. Look at it compared to Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple. It's a timeless hard rock anthem.

Eh, fair enough... I'd pick The Nile Song and Not Now John as being up there with those other songs.

reply

Totally.

Hard rock dosen't mean metal, or HARD rock. It just means rock. Except for poppy rock. Example, Yes, Rush, The Kinks, the Rolling Stones, etc. were on the list. I was insluted by the top 2o. Deep Purple should have been on there, Soundgarden, Sex Pistols, Guns N Roses, and Van Halen should have been way lower.

reply

Guns N Roses were in the top 20, which is where they should have been - have you never heard November Rain, Welcome to the Jungle or Paradise City?

GN'R sucks, Jane's Addiction should have been higher.

reply

GN'R rocks!

I have heard all of those songs, and with the exception of Novemeber Rain and Sweet Child O' Mine, I can't stand GNR.

reply

Well, we all have our own tastes, I suppose...
But I love GN'R.

I'm with those that are for Pink Floyd's placing on the list. And they are not solely a psychedelic band - really, only their earliest stuff is. It's a mixture of psychedelia and progressive rock, and a lot of it is pretty damn hard. Especially compared with Green Day and Hole.

reply

You're acting like hard rock is a specific genre. It is not. It is an umbrella term covering a wide variety of rock music with "hard edged" qualities such as loud, distorted guitars. Both psychedelic rock and blues rock were crucial in the development of heavy metal, and therefore can be considered forms of hard rock. As for placing them ahead of proto-metal artists like Ozzy Osbourne and Deep Purple, the rankings are based on an assessment of quality (which you may or may not agree with), not on whether they are "more hard" or "less hard" than other entries.

If I had to describe Pink Floyd in relation to hard rock, I would say that their music uses hard rock instrumentation (more evident in The Wall than in Dark Side of the Moon) to produce a mellow, jazzy groove. It's an interesting, unique sound that few bands before or since have achieved.
