1997?

Why was this movie set almost ten years before its actual release? what advantage to the story was there in setting the movie in 1997? it seems that that would just make it harder to make (because all of the refferences and cell phones and cars had to be pre 1997) with out adding any benifit to the story.

Probably because Sarah would be in her 30's in 1997 and in her 40's in 2005. So probably just for the lead characters.

1997 was my favorite year so far in my life. I got married and all basically went well for me. Sadly, that year, I lost an aunt to cancer at a young age the month before my wedding. That wasn't fun.
Fast forward to the 2000s. War, terrorism, and a lot of people I know are seriously ill or dying. I just lost my father last week and I lost my husband's brother a year and a half ago very prematurely. So when I watch "Rumor Has It," it is about a young woman getting married and making it on her own and I did all that in 1997.

it is an odd thing as you're watching the movie. as i'm watching the movie i noticed a number of things that seemed out of place to be the current year. then it pieces together, if you think about it the characters age and when "the graduate" was it makes sense. the characters in the film are supposedly the inspiration for the "the graduate" and the would be much older if it was 2004/05.

Somehow I missed that little factoid about the date and was having serious problems with Jennifer's character's age. Born in 1964 . . . That would make her 41!!! No way. I suppose there might have been some casting issues with "Mrs. Robinson," too. But 1997 is such a weird choice.

reply

She was actually 36 making this, but was supposed to be 33, so it's a couple of years wrong either way..

Factoids are false, incidentally.

reply

It makes perfect sense to me. 1997 would be 30 years after the release of the film, The Graduate.

You got it!

reply

Me too.

Ah! So that's why she didn't use the internet to research rather than her phone. I mean, it existed then but it wouldn't be as automatic a pathway.

reply

Why not? 30 years would be a good time frame, since Graduate came out in 1967. Movies do this all the time.
