I adore this movie but I have one issue with it.

How and why does Rapunzel know what and when her birthday is?

You'd think mother Gothel would have either skipped telling her about birthdays or lied about when it was.

She had Rapinzel in that tower since she was an baby. The only way she would know what a birthday is, is if Gothel told her about them and when hers is and in that case she should have made up a day knowing full well that the lanterns were released on her birthday.

I dunno. Just something that bugs me. Otherwise it is a great and often underrated Disney movie.

As someone who loves this movie, I have thought about this but really it's just a nitpick. Tangled is a truly wonderful film and I would be doing it and myself a disservice by letting small nitpicks bother me. Glad you still love the film just the same.

One, Gothel let Rapunzel read books and she would probably learn about birthdays that way.

Two, Gothel wanted to keep Rapunzel happy so she wouldn't want to leave the tower. Apparently she didn't mind going on three-day trips to get some shells to make paint.

Three, Gothel would've loved to make Rapunzel feel old. She also loved making Rapunzel feel bad about herself in other ways.

Rapunzel was never supposed to leave the tower or know too much about the outside world, so it doesn't matter she celebrated her birthday the same day as the missing princess.

#3 it's actually a very interesting nuance I hadn't g'night about. But you're right. If Gothel wants to be young, she would consider getting older a bad thing and find ways to instill that in Rapunzel in a way to negatively affect hee self esteem.

Gothel probably didn't think that telling Rapunzel her birthday would have any lasting consequences. She was a villain who wanted to stay young, not a master planner. The only thing she needs is to keep Rapunzel happy enough to stay in the tower.

I think Gothel doesn't think the effect about that. Never mind. Just remember, Gothel tries hard to keep Rapunzel happy

Mother Gothel is a self absorbed person, so it wouldn't surprise me that she may have not even been aware that lanterns were being released on Rapunzels birthday until Rapunzel herself may have pointed it out. By that time, she may have been old enough to keep track of her birthday. Little kids keep track of their birthdays rather well.
