Uh, why are they all speaking English?

Even when they talk to family in the film, English is spoken. All Arab to Arab communication in it is mostly English. This makes no sense and sort of distracted me.

Also see: Don Lope de Aguirre speaking to his fellow conquistadors in idiomatic High German.

We're dealing with text, not reality.

willing suspension of disbelief. try it.

I agree, it was very distracting. But it always is when they do that in movies. They leave the dialogue in English and attach a phoney accent to "remind" the audience that they probably A.) aren't native English speakers B.) didn't speak English at all C.) remind us that they are "foreign". Its very distracting and takes away from the beleivability of the whole thing. Especially since their accents aren't Arabic at all.

"It's made in America, so it's spoken in English. Enough said."

Actually it was a European film. Most of the actors were British actors of Middle-Eastern descent.

Also 99% of all aliens on Star Trek Next Generation speak English.

Rofl.

I don't understand why people care if they are speaking in English or not... It's a great film nonetheless.

reply

I agree, who cares!

Look at how any American films are set in France or other European countries where everyone speaks English. The best these movies do to sound "European" is have American actors speak in ridiculous "British" accents to sound pseudo-European.

I think if this movie had addressed all languages spoken, subtitles would have been extremely distracting to the subject matter. They probably spoke multiple languages, which would make sense if they were attending school in Europe. I would imagine that at the very least they could speak German and French, and possibly English in addition to any dialects of Arabic of their native country.
