The Scene were mittens admitted she was abandoned

Okay now I work at the humane society and see cats and dogs come in all the time that are left behind by there owners. So I guess I understand the reality of it all. But the scene where mittens is yelling at bolt and then says

"they leave alone and declawed to fend for yourself, and you ask yourself what did i do wrong?" or something like that.

This scene brought tears to my eyes, I mean I look at a face of a cat now that is brought in cause someone found it abandoned and the look in there eyes say this to me.

Did anyone get emotional over this at all?

reply

yeah i did. it made me cry. very sad scene. the scene makes you realize how many heartless people leave their pets behind when they move to another home.

reply

Yeah it got to me to, I have a Siamese cat at home who was declawed, his owners moved away and he ended up with my family, if it hadn't been for my mother he'd have ended up on the streets. I used to feel pretty indifferent about what they did, but this movie brought out a lot of anger and contempt over it, even if it did happen over 10 years ago.

You should read this topic: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397892/board/flat/123483614

You'd be surprised how many people were emotionally moved by this film.

Putting aside the issue of abandonment (which is pretty awful just in itself), no one should ever declaw a cat for any reason. Not only does it leave them absolutely helpless if they should get outside and get lost (OK, Mittens was smart enough to bully the pigeons into finding food for her, but that's pure fantasy), it is also deeply psychologically traumatizing to a cat. It's as if someone cut the first joints of all your fingers off.

I agree with everyone. Pets don't deserve the right to die and people are just so cruel and heartless to be doing that. I don't understand why some folks have to dump them out in the street if they can't keep them while moving. My family and I still kept our dog a year after we got him when we moved a long time ago when I was 9 and he's still with us. There was even this one time some idiot locked a dog in the bathroom at the park as I was passing by. If they never wanted to have cats or dogs in the first place, then why do they waste their time with them and get rid of them like a piece of trash? They have feelings like we do!

No it's not because they couldn't deal with a cat having claws, its because they'd rather pay several hundred dollars to have it declawed, rather than pay 15-20 dollars for a scratching post.

That's not even remotely true. We had our two of our cats declawed because they refused to use a scratching post. We bought different varieties. They didn't like any of them. We used the anti-claw sticky tape on the couch, and they just scratched it off. They knew it was wrong because they'd stop and run if they were caught. So when we were getting new furniture, the two cats were declawed. We had a third one that wasn't because she used the scratching post or the scratching pad.

The same goes for other cats we've had. They all kept their claws because they didn't give such a problem. I mean, sure there was mistakes, but they learned to what to use and what not to use.

These cats weren't ex-feral were they? Maybe they weren't suited for indoor living. Regardless you've have made me at least reconsider my feelings on declawing. I guess I'm a little biased on the subject, my own cat was declawed by his previous owners and they were going throw him on the streets when they moved away, and he was about the only lucky one out of all their former pets. An indication to me that they didn't declaw him as a last resort, but did it out of convenience. Oh and I just have to say I love your quote, SG-1 has got to be my favorite Scifi series.

We got one when she was young enough to still need to be bottle fed. The refusal to use the scratching post was probably part of her "I want to dominate everyone" personality. (She calmed down a great deal when she got in her senior years.) The second cat was her kitten. She didn't have the same personality as her mom, so I don't know why she refused. Maybe she was just imitating her mom. The odd thing is, she started using the scratching pad after she was declawed. (She still does.) Glad you like my signature. :)

To get back on topic. The scene got to me too. One of the cats we have now was abandoned. Found her alone in the middle of the night in a Target parking lot. (I worked night shift.) She was the only one I found, and I wonder what became of her litter mates.

declawing it's simply convenient mutilation.

reply

So your furniture is that important to you that you'd rather mutilate your cat than have it scratched? Wow! I'm sorry but I have a hard time wrapping my mind around that.

I have to say that the scene with Mittens left me rather puzzled because I had never heard of declawing. Not because I never had anything to do with cats - we've had cats since I was very little - but because it's outlawed in my country (unless for severe medical reasons). I googled it and it's outlawed in a lot of countries other than the US.
I don't get how anyone can do that to an animal just because it's convenient. That's totally disgusting for me.

So to spare yourself from the inconvenience of having furniture that doesn't look absolutely perfect, you took away your cats' means of self-defense. Not to mention the fact that claws are also used for climbing, hunting, and extra traction on soft surfaces. How is that not an act of cruelty? Also, don't you realize that a cat feels pain after he or she has been declawed? I wonder: How would you feel if someone came along and ripped out your nails, just because they thought your nails were an inconvenience to them?

Here is a description of the declawing procedure. I don't think anything, especially sparing a piece of furniture, is worth what a cat goes through.

OMG! YES! I actually came here to post that. I love cats and it breaks my heart that there are so many abandoned cats around. It still makes me want to cry, just thinking of that scene. I'm sure animals must wonder what they did wrong, when they are abandoned by their owners. So sad.

My family adopted a cat that was left behind by her owners when they moved, and she was all I could think of when Mittens told Bolt of her abandonment (especially since she looks a lot like Mittens: black and white with green eyes). I can't believe how insensitive some people can be. The only "consolation," was that she wasn't declawed.

The worst part was that she was going to have kittens. Because she was in poor health, one of them didn't make it.
