ATHWS was very disappointing

Patriotism is supposed to mean love for one’s country. But in director Anil Sharma ’s films it acquires a new definition and becomes hatred towards one’s neighbor.

Like his previous flicks, Sharma’s latest film, Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo is jingoistic in flavor. The movie is not without Pak bashing and there are dialogues aplenty that insinuate towards Akshardham Temple episode, the Parliament attack and the terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir with continuous reference to Pakistani support to militants.

And the funny thing is that the movie is being promoted as Indo-Pak friendship movie. And what does it show in the name of Indo-Pak friendship? – the forces of the two countries joining hands in the end to fight militants who try to sabotage the Amarnath Yatra.

The film has Amitabh Bachchan playing an ageing former soldier who has seen his son sacrifice his life in battlefield. Now it pains him to see that his grandson ( Bobby Deol ) is thinking of quitting armed forces and going abroad.

Akshay Kumar plays an Indian p.o.w in Pak jails who eventually escapes to join war against terrorism with his compatriots.

The film also stars newcomer Divya Khosla as the love interest of Bobby and Akshay.

In truth, ATHWS is a venomous, jingoistic flick disguised as a friendship movie. And it comes in very bad taste in the times when the relationship between the two countries is at an all-time high and the cultural exchange has begun between the people of two nations.

The only non-irritating thing in the movie is the romantic track between the three leading characters.

I feel the message of this movie, however pro-Indialy it was presented, is that whatever has happened between the two countries should be put behind us.
SPOILER WARNING-the example is Akshay Kumar's character. The Pakistani officer tortures him, yet he befriends the officer later and works with him.
SPOILER FINISHED-
A little pro-India slant should be excused as it is a bollywood movie and Anil Sharma is an Indian.
Patriotism in this movie is sacrificing yourself and kids for your movie. "Yaad rakhiye ki is desh ne humme sab kuch diya hain".

It wasn't just a little pro Indian, it was all out pro Indian. I felt disgusted watching the lecture the major (amitabh) give kunal (bobby), it went something on the lines of "you should die for your country because its your country" what kind of lameass excuse is that, havn't they heard of Thomas Aquinas? Even if you havn't, wouldn't common sense suggest that everyone else also has a country and that they might be reciting the garbage you're saying. Also considering the major was Sikh a turbaned one at that (despite trimmed beard and blue contact lenses), he should have known what Guru Gobind Singh Ji had said about war and conflict (which is just about the same as Thomas Aquinas' rules).
Other things to note in the film, the general who shot all those innocents at the begining and later became a terrorist shouldn't have actually survived to begin with as its an unwritten rule that you don't show mercy to those who have surrendered after fighting to the last bullet.
Other things wrong with the film are the crappy special effects with the rubber torpedoes and men being pulled away by strings. If you've seen any good war films like "Saving Private Ryan", "Full Metal Jacket" or "Apocalypse Now", you would think the battle scenes are a joke. Also considering how powerful India is with its massive army, artillary and airforce, its ridiculous seeing how overwhelmed they are in some of the scenes, when a simple artillary bombardment or air strike could have done fine.
Then there's the love triangle (and this was just pathetic, typical love at first site crap) just thrown in for the sake of adding a few forgetable, unnecessary and inappropriate songs to sell some CDs.
To sum it up there's nothing new this film does, Pakistani's are monsterous terrorists, Hindustan can do nothing wrong and apparantly has the world's support, your only female friends are supermodels, you can do anything if you set your mind to it despite getting blown 15 ft in the air, shot in the leg, standing next to 10 kgs of detonated TNT and getting thrown off a cliff.
P.S being Sikh I found it especially wierd when amitabhs character was praising Shiva and taking part in the rituals, and bobbys character bowing to a hindu shrine and trying to run off with Shweta who he hardly knew anyway.

Maybe this movie was a disappointment to some and you have your right to have that opinion. However, I disagree with your views. I do not believe this was a disappointment because I had no expectations when watching this movie and found it to be a decent Bollywood movie...With that being said

"This movie is all out pro-indian." Umm yea we aren't watching a Pakistani movie made by a Pakistani director now are we?? You really got to be kidding me with a statement like that!

I will give credit to the director because to me, it did seem as if he was trying to show that both countries should move on and progess. He showed multiple instances that showed that this was a story about the two countries joining forces rather than making a film about a one-sided pro-Indian film...

And that article...

"And the funny thing is that the movie is being promoted as Indo-Pak friendship movie. And what does it show in the name of Indo-Pak friendship?"

Obviously this person did not happen to watch all of the scenes in the movie!! I mean come on!! Why else would they show the pilgrimage of the Hindus and Muslims?? Ok so some of you make the argument that all Pakistanis are bad and only the Indians are good in the movie? However, there was also the Pakistani officer (I forget his name) who was shown as bad but then he made up for it by saving Akshaye Kumar! Its not as if all the Pakistani officers were shown as bad. Even the one who let Akshaye's character escape from the POW camp was shown as being human and was not shown as an evil Pakistani officer in the movie. To say that in this movie all Pakistanis were shown as evil men and all Indians were shown as good is FALSE!! Go watch the movie again because your claim is not valid...

Even in the end they put up "The Beginning" to show that we are progessing and hopefully in the future there will be no more hatred or violence against the two nations.

I hope the the people who said such statements decide to reply to my opinion in this thread. I welcome your thoughts.

Thanks...

Have not seen the movie, but on the last part, if you visit India, you will see that there are a lot of Sikhs who visit Hindu Temples and Hindus who visit Gurudwaras.

reply

To clarify, anybody is allowed to visit Sikh gurdwaray so that shouldn't be a problem however though many Sikhs in India may be visiting Hindu temples I doubt many of them will be of the turban wearing variety (i.e. the religious ones) a as strict core belief in Sikhism is the existance of a single deity.

O yeh the film is lame so I wouldn't bother if I were you.

reply

Knew about every one allowed in a gurudwara. i have been to quite a few gurudwaras (including Anandpur Sahib)

In most of the temples nowadays, everybody is allowed to enter (like in gurudwaras). The sikhs i saw entering temples are turban wearing ones (else ii would not know they were Sikhs) . Even Hinduism believes that there is oone god with many forms and by visiting temples and offering oblations the Sikhs may not be violating their beliefs.

Just end with my experience that our Sikh landlords in delhi (in 1998) were devout sikhs and at the same time had a lot of photographs of Hindu Deities along with those of gurus.

Well, this could lead to an intense religious debate. so, stopping here.
Would be better if you could inquire with some Sikhs who have lived for a good time in India. i might do the same next time i see a turbanned gentleman in a temple (whether they feel they are violating core sikh beliefs).

All of Anil Sharma's movies are aimed at masses who after having slogged physically would not tolerate anything subtle. So, action means the hero bashing up every one, dialogues are loud and patriotism means Jingoism.

Prpbably the friendship element was introduced midway during the making of the film because of improved ties between the neighbours.

Still have nit mustered the courage to watch this!!!
