The real problem with the show was

The 2 brothers had EXACTLY the same voices, especially while riffing. With MST3K, you had a range of characters and personalities. They also had very distinct voices and you could hear the talented voice acting in it.

With cheap seats, it was always a dead pan nasally voice talking over the videos. It would have made the show so much better if they only used one brother and had someone else with voice acting talents riff with them. Even for an extreme resolution, have the brothers just write and hire some voice over talents.

Don't misjudge me though, I liked the show. I just thought that it would have been better if it was executed differently.

The real problem was that they covered stupid things. They should have covered more sports like baseball, college football, pro-football, and pro-wrestling. Not put-put, double duche, cheerleading, etc

Did it not occur to you that they covered stupid things due to the enormous possibilities for HUMOR from STUPID things, and the double entendre that lies within the format?! Holy jumpin'!!!!!!

reply

Exactly. I think people are missing the point of the show. It's the stupid stuff that opens the door for such a wide range of great comedy. How much fun could they poke at a dam major league baseball game for god sakes

reply

Wow. You really are clueless.

Yea I agree that has been the trend 4 many of the episodes, some things that they put on were just stupid, just like the deep sea fishing one, nevertheless other episodes were funny even though it wasn't part of mainstream sports; running of the bulls, spelling b, lawnmower racing, karate, speed-eating contest. Those were great ones but they could've included more mainstream sports just 2 balance things out. Like the stanford game and the 1980 allstar game. And another thing, most of the stuff they showed was kinda old, that was another thing I didn't like about them. How about show us something from the 90's most of the stuff was from the 70 and 80's, sure 80's are my time but they should've showed us more recent stuff. It will b years (if ever) when this will b on dvd.

that was the point of the show and what made it funny...we see enough of the real sports on espns other shows...this was different, funny and refreshing

Yeah, I think some people missed the point of the show. They even say in the beginning of the show that its a chance to look at old shows in a new way. I think the point was that Ron Parker would go through the tape library and re-analyze the old classics. Because he had a tragic tape accident, Randy and Jason, not exactly knowing what to do, decided to just grab any old tape and analyze it.

And so what if I'm responding to a post from 6 months ago, I'm just a little behind.

You are exactly correct, and timely enough I guess.

Anyone who wanted "more current" or "newer" video clips absolutely does not understand the concept of this show, or comedy in general. Humor is based on hitting as many touch points from real life that people can relate to as possible. That is not done by limiting your scope to mainstream sports clips, or a certain time period. Look at all of the sitcoms and cartoons that travel to different locations, or even do "time-travel" episodes. This is necessary for longevity.
Think of all the different genres of film that MST3K covered. They certainly didn't want to limit themselves to only SciFi movies.

This show died off BECAUSE of the mainstream, newer, and more sports specific videos. Too many references to sports starts and sports history beyond the knowledge of the average T.V. viewer limited its appeal and doomed it to dusty vaults of ESPN Classic. That, and the HORRIBLE live audience format - that was worse than torture.

Think about it, if they had covered more general film clips once in awhile, and had less sports, it could have had enough episodes to be in syndication by now. I know, ESPN = Sports, - but they needed to move it Comedy Central or somewhere similar.

A really funny show, it needs to return somewhere else with adjustments. And no, another comment about needing different voices like MST3K is wrong - their format is similar, but different. Each can be successful.

I get what you are saying, but . . .
only using one of the Sklar brothers defeats the purpose of hiring them in the first place.

That's their thing, man.

They had lots of guest comedians for a reason.

Any news on the DVDs????
