Here's Why I Like Mike Conway's Work

Let me say that I had the pleasure of seeing Mike Conway's work, including "Terrarium" and "The Awakening", along with all the special features. I think he's a cool guy and has a lot going for him as a director. Why do I say this? Because like a person who walks into a home that's not fully decorated, I can see where Mike Conway is going and can go with his career as a filmmaker. Sure there are a bunch of things you can point out in his films to maybe discredit their value (that can be done with a lot of films, not just his), but the thing is, I know those things are only there because at the time, Mike had no way of getting around them.

I'm glad a guy like Mike took the time to make his films knowing that there might be things that weren't up to his standards, just so that he could bring to life an idea he loved. It's easier for a person to just say, "Hey, I don't have the budget to make this part of the film the best I'd like it to be so I'll just forget making it altogether." Instead, Mike Conway didn't do that, he went out and made his film no matter what. I actually think that's the sign of a good director--someone who wants to create so badly that they'll take one for the team in order to get their vision across. So for anyone that thinks that those "distracting things" in Mike's film were there because Mike didn't know any better, I don't think that's the case. Mike comes off pretty knowledgeable and intelligent to me and if something in his film does distract you, it's only because he didn't have the money and manpower to keep them from being there.

I definitely look forward to seeing where Mike's work takes him.

Slider, thanks for sharing your perspective. Next up, is EXILE, a much better movie, than TERRARIUM. I think you'll really like it.

When I read this, it reminded me of another passionate director with severely limited resources--Ed Wood. The big difference, though, is that Mike Conway is actually a good director! And instead of enjoying his films for how bad they are, you can appreciate them for all the good stuff he manages to achieve within a miniscule budget.
