I actually think the best actress in the movie was...

I have seen this movie more times then I can remember, I just love it but yesteday I was watching it and it hit me that the actress who plays the Adult Pumpkin was REALLY good in the movie. She has a wide range to play and she's really good at each range!
I also like Mrs Nitta too!
I do not really like Mameha! I think the way she said her sentances always came out wrong and in the wrong tone!

Who did you like the best and who did you dislike?

Yes, Youki Kudoh (Pumpkin) is a very good actress. Check her out in Snow Falling on Cedars--she has an uncanny ability to play the same character at different ages, and be entirely believable.

My personal favorite performance in this movie, though, was Gong Li as Hatsumomo. For me, she made this movie... how she went unnoticed by the Academy and the other renowned award institutions, is something I'll never understand.

I thought the adult pumpkin was wonderful and agree that she had such a range of character (compared to puddle-deep character that was Sayuri).

I did think hatsumomo was wonderful as well, but I feel like she would have been so much better if it was her own language she was speaking. I imagine it's a testament to her skills as an actress that she did such a wonderful job in spite of the little English she knew. I just feel like her lines could have been delivered with a little...more. More evil, more cunning, more haughtiness. If that makes any sense. But she was so delightfully sadistic, wasn't she :-)

I really liked the actress who played Mother. She carried it off naturally and didn't linger on her English lines like some of the other actresses.

She even made the character more human than in the book, like her growing softness once Sayuri is adopted.

Youki Kudo was really good. Suzuka Ogo was really good as well and she was so young then. Gong Li was also really amazing. Zhang Ziyi was also good. I had never heard or seen any of the actors in this film before, which was really interesting.
