Hatsamumo

I hope I spelled that right but I sure wish they would've gone into her history a little to explain why she is so angry and her need to be loved so bad.

Me too. It wasn't covered in the book either, but since Hatsumomo's purpose was as a challenge and obstacle to Sayuri I guess it wasn't supposed to be important. At least they humanized her a bit with her love for the restaurant boy.

The book doesn't explain, but the life a geisha is a hard and lonely one. "No one becomes a geisha because they want to."

reply

I'm sure she's angry because she's forced to sleep with men she doesn't love. I understand being a geisha is culturally considered a high honour, but it's human to want to love and have that love returned. She's nothing more than an object
