Watching this again the other day I just can't understand how she didn't at least get a golden Globe nom for supporting actress. Nothing against Zhang but she has performed much better in other movies. I'd say Hatsumomo and Pumpkin showed more range imo.

She didn't just play the "'mean girl" - she played the antagonist so well, in that you really want to know so much more about her. She's very engaging, I loved her performance
My only criticism is she overdid the 'angry drunk' in many scenes. For such a cunning geisha, her mannerisms look like she's always on drugs.

The whole movie suffered from the ridiculous overblown "controversy" about the casting and the Academy was very happy to have a justification for their usual brand of racism in nomination. For once, they got to look like the good guys for *not* nominating Asian actresses .
