Dan loves Blair more than Serena

I recently rewatched the series, and I can see now that Dan's feelings for Blair were so much deeper than his feelings for Serena.

I really find it weird that even though Penn dated Blake for three years, he was really void of emotion. They also broke their characters up for stupid reasons.

And to add to that, Dan's Serena exposé made him the biggest jerk, yet she gave in because we know that she is a moron.

You bet he married her for her money and their half sibling was not invited to the wedding.

Man was broke his friends sewed him for everything he had after writing that book

I consider Dan’s feelings for Blair revolved around his ego—he wanted to see if he could win the heart of someone who dated the kinds of people Blair dated.

* Dan’s Serena chapter largely ruined her for anyone else but she knows Dan wrote it largely because he considered she didn’t fully respect him.

* It’s implied that Dan and Serena got Ivy Dickens’s money. Outside of that, Dan was already very rich in the beginning of the series finale to the point that Georgina Sparks called his UES apartment a hovel thus telling him (and the viewership) he could afford much bigger and better.

Given how quickly Dan rose, 5 years later he’s possibly a mogul already. He probably has his own production company (which Serena obviously can help run) and maybe even his own studio (although unlikely).

* It’s greatly implied that Dan knew almost everything about Serena including that she slept with a professor (though that turned out to be untrue) and a bullfighter. Vanessa Abrams casually mentions these things when she sees Dan is about to lose his virginity to Serena.

Dan simply gets disappointed with Serena when he learns of hers sleeping with Nate and he gets disappointed with her when she disrespects him like refusing to attend Yale, having her boyfriend living with Dan, making a sex tape with Dan, etc.

<[Derena] were destroyed the minute he choose Blair over her. She comes off as being a consolation prize.>

Blair is largely upset with Dan after her wedding because it’s revealed that Dan’s always preferred Serena and continued to prefer Serena.

Inside Out destroyed the image of Blair Waldorf that Dan created in Inside and then Blair knows that Gossip Girl itself was Dan’s way of ending up with Serena.

SenoritaTorres

* Dan didn’t even know if Blair was in love with him. It’s certainly not certain whether Dan wanted to marry Blair.

Moreover, remember that Dan’s original plan was for Serena and he to attend Yale together and essentially be ‘away from the others’ and ‘alone together’ for 4 years. Later, Serena gives him that ‘one more chance’ nonsense. Later, Dan realizes that needs to be equal to Serena for their relationship to actually work.

* In the TV series, the son of Rufus and Lily is mostly a problem in terms of Serena’s and Eric’s relationship with Lily and Dan’s and Jenny’s relationship with Rufus.

If anything, Scott’s not invited to the Dan/Serena wedding simply because he’s not a member of the UES.

The latent causes of faction are thus sown in the nature of man [...] views

Yes, they were

I believe Dan was infatuated and obsessed with Serena, cause he thought that, even if she was from the UES, she was different from everyone else, but the closer he got to her, the more he realized she could basically get away with anything and have everything she wanted because of her name.

With Blair, I feel it happened the exact opposite. She represented everything he hated about the UES, but found out that she actually had to work hard to get what she wanted, like Yale and that internship, and that they had things in common

I'd say he found in Blair his idea of Serena, and in Serena his image of Blair

Excellent post.

Dan marrying Serena will always be a huge WTF. I get that the original creators loved this couple and always wanted them together.

But, look at the story... look at where their relationship went. They were destroyed the minute he choose Blair over her. She comes off as being a consolation prize.

I completely agree. If Blair hadn't chosen Chuck in the end, Dan would not have given Serena a second glance. Seriously. He was awful to her after they sleep together and was only concerned with getting Blair to forgive him. He was so bitter in season 6 when she chose Chuck and had already admitted to Serena that he was in love with Blair. Serena had made her feelings clear, told him she loved and wanted him, and he only had eyes for Blair. It was such bad writing. Not to mention the fact Dan and Serena getting married was just plain sick. How would their brother explain THAT to people?

reply

Obviously. He never loved Serena at all. She was just his "dream girl" who could never measure up to his fantasy of her.
