Did Dan and Blair have serious endgame potential?

Was there a real possibility of Dan and Blair ending up together on the show? Were Dan and Blair just a roadblock for Chair and Derena? I've heard it from both sides. We're the producers seriously considering having Dair end up together, or was it wishful thinking from the fans? I was on the boards (when Dair were dating) reading that it was a serious contender but then Chair/Derena were endgame.

I think they did. Absolutely. Derena made no sense post season 1. They lost that spark they initially had and never got it back. They were cute, but they were a puppy love couple that had no real potential to last. I was never a fan of Chair. Their relationship never made sense to me and is not one i like to see. Especially after the hotel thing. How do you trust someone after doing a thing like that? Then the writers have her pathetically chase after him.

Dair always made sense to me. In the first few seasons, they were contentious, but they had each others backs when it counted. Their banter, the back and forth, biting and sarcastic. Loved it. Penn and Leighton work amazingly well together. Their friendship arc is season 4 is the best thing the show ever did. He was there for her, even when she was going after other guys. I admit that their actual relationship in season 5 could have been better, but that is the fault of the writers. Despite that, there is amazing moments from there that captivate me to this day.

In short, yes. I think Dair had endgame potential. Chair was toxic and destructive and they really didn't have much in common. Not the basis of a lasting relationship. Derena was stale and not exciting. They too had not much in common. Dair was fresh and exciting. They could be sweet and loving, mean and sarcastic, hot and sexy. They were alike in the ways that matter, and not alike in ways that keep things interesting.

No. Blair/Dan was done to appease the tiny minority who rabidly wanted 'Dair' to happen.

While it's possible Blair could have fallen for Dan over Chuck given she actually has more in common with Dan and Chuck mostly only has his money (Dan is also great as sex so Chucks 'skills' aren't what favored him over Dan.), it's silly Dan would have preferred Blair over Serena. If that were the case, he would have initially fallen for Blair instead of Serena. He knew Blair was a virgin. He knew he was 'second in the class' and Blair was a straight-A student.

I will say there are signs from season 1 on that Blair is at least somewhat interested in Dan; however, Dan doesn't seem interested in Blair until 'Dair' starts ramping up in season 4.

Regarding Dan's relative interest in Blair, he was actually interested in Georgina Sparks and certainly attracted to her throughout meeting her in season 1 and their sexual relationship in season 3.

I consider after learning more and more about Blair that Dan increasingly respected her, eventually loved her, and was eventually in love with her but he always loved Serena and knew that whenever things stopping 'working' with Blair that he could eventually be with Serena again.

Yes but saldy they listen to much to the most vocal "shippers" on the net.

One thing writers should never do.

We all know that the crap about "Chair" was always the endgame was just pure *beep* to please the fans of said ship

I was happy with it either way, but I really did love Blair and Dan together. For one thing, they were my two favorite characters, but for another - I love it when a couple starts by hating each other. Like Pacey and Joey. They weren't slated to be endgame, but then they were.

That's the way i like my stories too, when you actually get to see the disliking turning into tolerating eachother, then frenemies, friends, and then love. Got to like a story like that, when you are actually shown the evolution of the relationship, not just X lurves Y from the first episode because we (the writers) say so.

I truly wish that Blair and Dan just could have stayed great friends - why does every relationship need to turn sexual?! I think they had good chemistry, but they were just great friends and should have remained that way.

reply

Didn't Chuck and Blair hate each other at first too? I think Dan and Blair had great chemistry as friends, it was kind of weird to see them romantic together, IMO.

reply

I like to think so. The the pair had such great chemistry.

I wish the show had pursued it.

I think they should have stayed together but it seemed like the writers were pre determined to make "chair" happen even if from a story standpoint it was a very unhealthy relationship..yet tween girls loved it

I love watching the season 4 Dair storyline. The interactions between Dan and Blair are the most interesting and captivating throughout the series but especially in seasons 4 and 5.

It would have been great character progression had the writers went all in on Dair and had them end up together. It's water under the bridge but I can always go back and see the awesomeness that was Dair in season 4 & 5.

I always hoped that Dan and Blair would've ended up together. I liked them waaaay better than Chuck and Blair.

Because, even though it is fictional, I really dislike when movies, tv series or books, take a really abusive relationship and labels is as "romantic". I know that the whole "trying to make a bad guy good" has always been really popular, but there is a difference between a "bad" guy not treating someone the right way, and a totally psychotic and abusive guy like Chuck. It actually kinda scares me, how these kind of guys in fiction, always turns out to be the most popular.

Dan and Blair always had great chemestry. Even in the early season 1, we have this really great moment between them, with the heart to heart talk in that episode where Serena is chosen to model instead of Blair.
And even though it is also a cliché, I really loved the whole thing with them not liking each other, to tolerate, to respect, to like and in the end, to love each other. Even though they were very different, they also had a lot of things in common. And their differences, always seem to complement each other.

And I am pretty sure, that Chuck and Blair being endgame, is because they were too afraid to go against the huuuuge fanbase Chuck and Blair unfortunately had. Having them end up together, was the safe choice.

Agreed! Bad boy seems to get expanded into this creepy and obsessive territory. He kept Blair in a box and didn't inspire any growth. He was horrible to her and I'm sure they ended up divorced in a bitter custody battle. Dan and Blair were just way better. I'm also a sucker for the intellectual characters ending up together.

From what I remember, Dair only happened because it was the most vocal 'ship at the time and Gossip Girl was desperate for ratings.

I also remember that Serena/Nate and Dan/Vanessa only happened to appease the minority of viewers who read the novels and wanted those relationships to happen in the TV series.

Blair was still in love with Chuck and Dan was still in love with Serena. Dair never had the passion of those other relationships. Dair also wasn't as sexually compatible.

Dair was also relatively boring and one of the main reasons Dan liked Serena is because she's vivacious.

Ultimately, Blair wouldn't hurt Serena enough to actually marry Dan. And Blair still loved Chuck.

Ultimately, Dan would probably prefer to be with Serena, Blair, and Georgina but he prefers Serena most out of those 3.

(Also, Georgina probably ends up marrying Jack Bass consequently becoming part of Dan's 'royal family'.)
