From a Koontz book?

Which one?

TIA.

I've been wondering that also. I saw a commercial for it today and it says "based on characters by ...." I've been searching and can find a reference of Helios in "From the Corner of His Eye" I've not read this book though, so I don't know what it's about. Also searching for Deucalion I find a mention or two of "Midnight" it's been a looong time since I've read this one, so I don't remember what it's about. I don't know if these names are really in these books or just coming up tag alongs with my search but I think I'm going to have to check them out to satisfy my own curiosity.

From a mythology stand-point (found these during my search) seems that Deucalion is the son of Prometheus - a fire god, I think. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was also called "Modern day Prometheus" I believe. Helios also seems to be some sort of sun god.

Also, he has/had 3 or four pen-names if this is from something he wrote it could be under one of those names from long ago. But I'm thinking he has just helped write the screenplay for the movie/series? I've read most of his books and sure don't remember anything about Frankenstein.

Midnight is the one where the scientist with the God-complex wants to create a race of "perfect" humans, but some regress into savage animals and thus the experiment goes horribly wrong.

Kinda Frankenstein-esque, but not really.

I believe this is independant from any of his books.

Prometheus was a titan, not a god. He represented forethought and gave fire to man. Deucalion was his son, and was the Greek equivalent of Noah with his ark.
And yes, Helios was the god of the sun that rode across the sky from east to west in a flaming chariot.

Koontz has said in an interview that this is an original work that updates the classic Mary Shelley tale to modern day times. With the exception of Shelley's novel, this has not existed before in any way shape or form.

I think it's going to be pretty good-I've heard it's pretty edgy-should be better than the Hallmark version.

Can anyone tell me when it's supposed to show?

reply

I think it shows October 10th, but you can check the USA Network site to double check

...yes, but you're forgetting one thing: I'm Captain Jack Sparrow.

You didn't by any chance stop to think that it's not based on any of his books, and instead he wrote the screen story (or indeed the teleplay) for this...movie? Come on, people! I'm not a big Koontz fan to begin with, but to take a brilliant work of literature that worked on several levels including that of horror, writing what can be best described as a sequel and keeping the title of the original book is just about as low as you can go. Granted USA had a hand in this...but Koontz is just as responsible. This is a sequel, not an adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic novel. Koontz can never hope to match it...but if you pay him enough....he'll apparently try.

From The Corner of His Eye is the best thing Koontz has done or ever will do.

While I agree that From the Corner of His Eye is a good book (Thomas Vanadium is one of the best detectives/ characters ever created) I think that two books of his are often overlooked. Twilight Eyes, a lesser-known of his book, is just awesome. It might not seem like it but in a cynical roundabout way, it's about how mankind might just have the ability to redeem itself for its mistakes. Secondly is Dragon Tears, a book that is just an awesome action story. Honestly, of the three though, I have to say my fav is Twilight Eyes.

I think that Koontz's most recent crap (and some of it is crap, like One Door Away From Heaven) can't compare to his old stuff. By the Light of the Moon was alright, but Odd Thomas was predictable to the bone. It's been going downhil since From the Corner. I think he should to do another Christopher Snow book.

Favre fan Ctom, sorry i can't remember you're full user names. But i would just like to state the Dean Koontz has one of the most brilliant minds ever and is one of the greatest authors ever in my opinion. the books From The Corner of His Eye and Watchers are true literature masterpieces. And if you wanna read a real good horror story, then try Phantoms. I've yet to see this movie Frakenstein, but i'm sure he didn't do it for money. He did it for his own personal enjoyment, and i doubt he was trying to rewrite a classic. I know he did write the story for this movie, and i'm 99% sure that it isn't taken from any of his books, definately not From the Corner of His Eye as someone had suggested.

i loved One Door Away From Heaven, but it fit with my cynical outlook on organized religion.

Haven't seen this version, but Koontz wrote the short story/updated version this movie is based on. He expanded the original story, and it'll be published as a novel this coming January. From what I've heard, he'll also be writing at least two more subsequent novels that'll be adapted for the screen (well, USA Network).

The book is called Frankenstein. I just read it and it's incredible. Apparantly he was going to team up with Martin Scorcese to do this Tv Series/mini-series but backed out (as did Scorcese) due to creative differences. Instead, he lent the characters but wrote his own book. I just finished it and its wonderful. It's part one. I'm looking forward to part two.

I havent seen the series.

Just found this in the Trivia section. He also explains it in a forward of his book.

The story for Frankenstein was originally created by 'Dean Koontz ' and collaborator 'Kevin Anderson' , and intended to become a series. When USA became the production company and distributor, Koontz signed on as screenwriter and executive producer. Martin Scorsese also signed on as executive producer, and a cast (most of which were in the final product) was assembled for what was intended as the pilot to a weekly series. Following creative disputes between USA and Koontz, both Koontz and Scorsese left the project. Koontz removed all affiliation with the project, but allowed USA to use the names of his characters.

Koontz is an awesome writer,,,,,blows away Steven King,,,well Kings newer stuff anyhow. Its a shame though, like Steven King, they just can't seem to make a good movie from his books. I have read both the Frankenstein books. Part 1: The Prodigal Son and Pat II: City of Night. The third book does not come out till next summer. If you have seen the movie, i highly recomend reading the book. 100 times better, as it is in most cases. I also highly recomend Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz, truly an awesome book. I am praying and hoping that one day they turn Koontz's book Strangers into a movie. Truly one of the great books of modern times. To do it justice, they would have to do it like they did The Stand(1994), and make a TV mini-series out of it. For those of you who have not read any Koontz, i highly highly recomend Watchers, Twilight Eyes, Strangers, Odd Thomas and of course the Frankenstein books. If you are a fan of horror/ suspense books, i assure you they will not dissapoint.

Anyone know exactly when the third book comes out? I've been dying to read it since I finished the first two around late summer to early fall. I just got this movie from the library so I'm gonna check it out to see how much of Koontz's ideas got fiddled with and which remained true.

It was nice to see some of the concepts were used in the movie, but as a whole I didn't have a great feeling about it. Artie's called Anthony, his sitter was different, no Randall six, no other murderer that Harker cripples, they changed Micheal's last name for some reason, and Parker Posey didn't come off as the Carson O'Conner that I knew from the books. Helios to me was pretty dead on and I expected Deucalion to be a tad more muscular but otherwise pretty good work by Vincent Perez for all the ten minutes he's in this. Also why the old black lady instead of the guy from the circus in the movie house? I actually liked the lady but curious as to the change as well. And Erica's story was rushed.

When is the date for the third book, or they haven't released it yet?
This movie isn't so bad if you never read the books but if you have... well, you know how you feel.

reply

It wasn't originally a book. Koontz intended it to be a tv show, but the network screwed it up, so he publishes the story in a series of books, which are really good and you should read.

reply

Loved this idea just wished it went more with the book and it is sad that it was not going to continue, oh well there is always the books and the GNs.
