this is why the world has a problem....

with america.... its torino ...not torin....

its so arrogant to just rename something cuase it "sounds like it will sell better" ... what a joke...

iusually try to question american bashing as much as i can cause many people do it without cause.....

but this is the perfect example of why many people think they are arrogant and self-rightious...

I'm American and I totally agree with you on the name - it's an Italian town, call it by its Italian name.

But don't blame the Americans alone. The process of changing names is called "anglicanization" for, you guessed it, the English - who were doing it back in Shakespeare's time. "Merchant of Venice" anyone?

However, NBC has been using "Torino." Which is good.

Something has to be done, but nothing too original, because hey, this is Hollywood.

reply

Thank you, word_girl. Smacklab, all nations do this. Not just English-speaking nations. Certainly not just America. Take the country we refer to as "Germany" in English. To Germans, the proper title of their nation is "Bundesrepublik Deutschland."

The Spanish call it "Alemania."
The Italians call it "La Germania."
The French call it "l'Allemagne."

It is not a matter of disrespect or arrogance. Simply a language issue.

reply

I'm Canadian and I also agree with you... Call it by its Italian name after all the games are being held in Italy... Plus Torino sounds 1000 times better than Turin

reply

You're an idiot Jade. This has absolutely nothing to do with people calling Torino "Turin". I know the Italians have different names for there cities than the English words for them, but Torino sounds a lot better.

Let's illuminate your third sentence:

"iusually try to question american bashing as much as i can cause many people do it without cause....."

The "joke" here is your post.

You are completely wrong to focus on what you think is "American arrogance and self-righteousness" since the U.S. isn't the only nation to use a different spelling of the host city in this years Winter Olympic Games, many nations do it.

Here is a German link that shows different spellings of cities from many different languages:

http://www.top500.de/g0039905.htm

I can list many different links from different countries that are similar to the German site above.

Are you now going to say that the Germans are "arrogant and self-righteous" for changing the spellings of many international cities around the world?

By the way, you misspelled Turin. It's not "Torin" like you wrote. You might want to check your spelling before sending your posts in the future to insure you don't look like a complete fool.

It's nice to see that foreign ignorance and hypocrisy are alive and well here on the Internet. Thank you for proving that point.

i agree that many many nations do this over time but it has been fazed out with globalization over the years and it's not like america has always call it turin.... it's a place you probably haven't even heard of...

so there is no need...

As for my spelling, do you really think i could be bothered to spell check something online? .... it's not like your going to see me in the street and say "that guy, he can't spell" ... any how most peeps U meet online wrt lik dis, so who is it 4 u 2 judge:P

as for calling me ignorant, squeezy boy, well your just being rude... i have a valid point, you can choose to ignore it and focus on petty things ... but it clearly shows you've got to much time on your hands... there's plenty of BS i could point out about your so called great nation but i at least showed you some respect...

As for other countries doing, well they are just following your lead... and how did the games rate? ... they did fine in the rest of the world... just your coverage is a dull as your president...

i can't believe i wasted this much time responding to you...

Generalization without any evidence provided by you to back it up. Tell us how it was "fazed" (phased) out.

As for my spelling, do you really think i could be bothered to spell check something online?
Haha, if you ever want to be taken seriously you should care. For someone who seems to care about how Turin/Torino is spelled, you certainly don't bother getting your own spelling correct.

Frankly, you don't know what you are talking about at all. You just figured you could find some thinly veiled way of attacking the United States, espeically after reading your post where you bring up many things that have NOTHING to do with the English language. In Piedmontese TURIN is the correct way of spelling it. By your assertion that make the "Shroud of Turin" invalid, something that it's been called before the US was even around. Anyway, how do you spell the place where Vatican City is?

"You've shown your quality sir. The very highest."

reply

Thanks Theoden, it appears that you clearly see what is going on. Great minds think alike. I honestly don't see how this person actually thinks he or she has a "point"?

Assuming I’ve never heard of Torino, Italy or Turin, Italy makes you look ignorant once again, proving my choice of wordage was correct all along. I guess being an Italian-American is proof to you that I don’t know what I’m talking about. You appear very foolish to me to have assumed that.

You’re just angry because I’m someone who is smart enough to see what your pathetic agenda is by thinking that America is “arrogant” for choosing to use the Anglo translation of the word Torino verses it’s Italian name The word Turin has NOT been “fazed out with globalization over the years” and YES, America has always called it Turin since America was first colonized by, guess who? Anglos! Get a clue smacky boy!

There is no insult by calling the city by either name. You just stupidly took the opportunity of calling America “arrogant” for using the Anglo name “Turin” (a name that has been used for centuries before The United States ever existed and is still used world-wide today) as an excuse to express your hatred of the U.S. From reading your rhetorical drivel, you obviously have a problem with America. No one here cares about your beef with the U.S. Go to a different forum for that since that’s what you like to do. Seriously, if this really had something to do with why you hate the States then you need help.

”so there is no need...” – smackyboy

There is no need for YOU to quibble over the nonsensical idiocy I described above.

”As for my spelling, do you really think i could be bothered to spell check something online? .... it's not like your going to see me in the street and say "that guy, he can't spell" ... any how most peeps U meet online wrt lik dis, so who is it 4 u 2 judge:P” – smackyboy

I didn’t ask why you didn’t use a spell checker, I’m just surprised that you revealed to everyone reading this that you couldn’t see the correct spelling of Turin when it was right in front of you the entire time. Which forum do you suppose this one is called, hmm? I wonder. Could it be, "Turin 2006: XX Olympic Winter Games" (2006)?

Your entire “point” was about the spelling of “Turin” rather than “Torino”, but you ended up misspelling the very name of what you are disputing. Don’t you think that anyone who was serious enough to try to make some “point” about the name of the city, in order to give the illusion that the person had a point to begin with, would at least want to be seen as somewhat intelligent by spelling the freaking name correctly?

”as for calling me ignorant, squeezy boy, well your just being rude... i have a valid point, you can choose to ignore it and focus on petty things ...” – smackyboy

I’m not being rude, you are by saying America is “arrogant” for using the Anglo name for Torino, as you can see from me challenging your “point”, twice! I didn’t “choose to ignore your so-called ‘valid point’”, nor did I “focus on petty things” either. I completely covered why there is no insult in using either the Italian name or it’s Anglo translation (both times) while questioning why you didn’t see or care to use the correct spelling, which was in front of you the entire time! As I said before, if this “point” of yours in any way makes you look at the U.S. with distain, then you are in dire need of… .

”... but it clearly shows you've got to much time on your hands...” – smackyboy

That’s a hypocritical statement considering you took the time to type out your original post only to end up replying to mine while ending your last post with, “I can’t believe I wasted this much time responding to you.” It’s clear to me that not only are you ignorant, but you’re also a hypocrite.

”... there's plenty of BS i could point out about your so called great nation but i at least showed you some respect...” – smackyboy

You showed no one any respect by calling America arrogant for using the Anglo translation of the city of Torino, Italy. I see you conveniently left out the nation where you are from since anyone could easily find faults with it, as are true for all nations. Like I said before, go to a forum where that kind of thing is encouraged; the Winter Olympic Games are about athletes from different countries competing against each other in athletic events, not politics.

”As for other countries doing, well they are just following your lead... and how did the games rate? ... they did fine in the rest of the world... just your coverage is a dull as your president...” – smackyboy

You just had to throw that into the mix didn’t you. Wow! You REALLY told me!

You do realize that by using personal attacks on our media and our president at this time proves what your “point” was originally intended for, don't you? Thanks for making that ever more clearer than before.

”i can't believe i wasted this much time responding to you...” – smackyboy

I can’t believe how foolish you made yourself look like in front of millions!

reply

When we call it Roma, Italia in common parlance, I'll get on board. In the meantime, it all just boils down to the fact that Torino sounded much jazzier than Turin to the suits at NBC.

Yeah, but the rest of the world eagerly wants to participate in America's culture (movies, TV, and media). Then they get offended by it. Can't have it both ways.

reply

See! People agree on how much we dislike certain people in the US (with power), change cultural things just so they can fit into them, and worse is that they force the rest of the world into it! - ElChompiras

You forgot to insert the word "ignorant" before the word "people".

Who the heck are "we" in your rant anyway? The ignorant people of the world or just you and elsmackydemierda?

Nobody is forcing you to do anything ElChompiras. If you don't like the way America chooses to film sporting events, change the channel and stop watching American productions. I'm sure that won't happen since you seem to enjoy this "American website" desperately trying to find faults that do not exist. BTW, CBC did a good job of covering the games, why didn't you watch their version? Let me guess, because then you would have nothing to bitch about? Pathetic!

I'm sure whatever country you're from would gladly accept money and/or aid from the U.S. if there was ever a problem; then if we didn't send enough, you would bitch about that too, right? Face it dude, your opinion is shallow and without merit.

*EDIT* I just read a different post of yours claiming to be from Mexico...now that explains everything! If you have ever been in Los Angeles, El Paso, San Diego, etc., then you would see your culture everywhere. You have no room to talk anymore ElChompiras... game, set, and match!
