Help me understand why this show is funny

The second this show comes on, I'm already bored. I feel like I should like it, being Canadian and all, but I can't seem to watch it for more than 2 minutes without falling into a deep sleep.

If it helps, I enjoy shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, King of the Hill, Seinfeld, Strangers With Candy...

I like it, but my wife hates it, will not even give it a chance...it just annoys her to watch it.

I find it humorous, think the acting and writing are good (though I don't think I have ever laughed out loud).

reply

I don't see how it would be possible to explain "funny". It is an emotional rather than an intellectual reaction. Either you are attuned to the humor in this show or you aren't.

"I don't want any Commies in my car. No Christians, either."

So first is the sarcasm which isn't everybody's style for humor. Second is the understated almost deadpan way the jokes are delivered. There is no laugh track and the jokes aren't always super obvious.

An example I think of often is at one point, Davis and Karen (the cops) are practicing for a softball game. Karen asks Davis what happens if someone sees them when they should be on duty, Davis replies something about the low likelihood of a crime in Dog River on a Tuesday afternoon. Then it cuts to the phone ringing in the police station, the obvious joke is "haha, Davis just said there wouldn't be a crime and the phone is ringing at the police station, haha", but when the answering machine picks up it is Brent saying "Hope you guys are practicing for slow pitch". It isn't nearly as funny if you don't expect the obvious joke.

Thanks for your response. :D

if you don't like it or find it funny, simple: just don't watch, no reason to justify why it ain't funny to you

reply

You want someone to explain comedy to you? That kind of ruins the joke.

Listen, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

reply

Not necessarily. I think "kurth" did a pretty swell job.

reply

It's a very dry comedy indeed. Either you like it or you don't ;)

Many people don't like one or more of the shows you list. It's a matter of taste.

Are you one of those sorts who asks "what's so funny" when people laugh?

reply

Not usually.
