i agree. this was a good film. the character most endearing to me was the father. couldn't articulate why it was important for him to care for, nurture, or protect this child, but he obviously felt it was his mission in life. unusual for a culture where female children are not valued, even more so when the female child has a deformity.

I agree. Except for the birth control scenes, the movie is noteworthy: beautiful cinematography, super performance by many of the Chinese actors, and a great message. Ok, yeah, some of the elements seem a little hard to believe (parents don't seem to bat an eye that their daughter will go to China alone), but the movie compels me to charitable action -- that and great cinematography make for a worthwhile film. Also, listening to the director's notes gives a whole new set of insights into the the great intercultural relationships going on behind the scenes in this film.

raincityslicka- i haven't seen this movie yet, but i plan too (its on my netflix list, hah) but i know what its about, and it was based of a girl who went to my school (the charachter sean astin plays was my old principal) and when you go on an operation smile mission, like the main charachter did, you DO go alone, like, without a parent. their are teacher chaperones, and other operation smile people, but no parents.

ok, an edit to my last post, i just watched this movie. i really didn't like it. none of that would ever happen on an operation smile mission. and the missions are so different. but whatever. it was movie.

In direct opposition to your post, I thought it was a beautiful film. No, a child/teen would not likely have the opportunity to wander off alone like that, unless he/she were kidnapped (god forbid!), but I thought it was beautifully done. I loved the comparison between the two girls.

Just a side note, though. If I had children, and they wanted to go off to a foreign country, alone, unless it was Canada, there's just no way! I would expect a chaperone from the school at the LEAST to accompany them on the plane, and at the hotel, etc. In this day and age, it is just not appropriate that TEENAGERS go off to another country like that, alone. I don't care if it's a humanitarian mission, or a trip to the beach!

I was stunned that Katie and Ted were put on the plane to go off by themselves.
