Rating

It says in the certification section that this was nearly rated R. Why? This is nowhere near an R rating.

i think it might be the hanging and burning the maids alive and the face sewed scene

In the director's commentary on the DVD, he said he had to cut back the lynching/burning sequence to avoid a problem with the film board. I assume that was the scene that could have earned the film an R rating.

This is an example of why I've come to loathe PG-13 as a rating for thrillers, horrors, suspense films. Most of the time, an R film is taken and cut/edited/trimmed in order to cater to the young teen audience, or occasionally a straight PG is made racier for PG-13. I would have loved to see the lynching/burning sequence as originally done.

Does anyone know if there is an unrated or NR cut floating around? I have seen a couple sites list UNRATED for the DVD but can get no further info on it. Maybe it was the Canadian release?

The full lynching scene can be found in the deleted scenes on the DVD. I didn't really see a difference.
