My, My, Macy

Macy Gray kicks all kinds-o-ass in this movie. She's been steadily impressive in small roles and she gives her best performance by far in Shadowboxer. The only problem is her early exit from the film. I would've loved more Macy!

reply

Absolutely! I almost forgot about what a stand-out she was, merely because she did exit pretty early. But you're right; she was great!

reply

You have to be kidding. She looked and acted like she was *beep* up in every scene she was in. And I don't think that it was acting. And I hate her voice.

reply

Yeah, I like Macy, but I just thought that she was effed up the whole time they were shooting. She didn't seem to be doing all that well... of course, if we saw some behind the scenes stuff with her all "normalized" then my opinion would change, but its no secret she is a total stoner [to say the least]...

reply

...She played one of the most annoying roles in the history of *beep* film.(IMO, of course).
I'm not sure if it was her fault or the scripts fault...but I hated her.

reply

Her character in the movie was identical to the one that she played in Training Day. She acts as if she is coked out.

reply

It is only a movie ! Acting ! Not real ! She is acting any way that she has to "for money " !

reply

she just plays a stereotypical black girl in this movie. her role is not exactly a tough one and she definiely overacts in it.
she can't even play dead correctly, in scene where cuba supposedly poisons her you can see here chest moving up and down as he leaves her apartment
this movie is absolute *beep*

I suck monkey spunk, big time

reply

Ghetto, to a new level! The script musta gotten mixed up with, "Training Day"
She's probably better suited for an episode on "Cops"

reply

"She looked and acted like she was *beep* up in every scene she was in."

OMG, I can't believe that this didn't even OCCUR to me! I just assumed that her "performance" was due to poor direction, writing or basic lack of acting skills.

But, this is as good of an explanation as anything else!

Is the character supposed to be retarded? If so, then she did an excellent job.

If someone asked me what was wrong with this movie, Macy Gray's performance would be the first thing that I'd think of. How the hell can you even call that acting?! It's not the way her characters are written, it's just the way she delivers each and every line. It kind of worked in "Training Day" but then it got old. And I read that she actually took acting classes...

reply

Training Day had a competent director.

reply

Macy in Training Day was okay, but she was at her best in Lackawanna Blues.

I, unfortunately, have to agree with the main consensus here, that Macy Gray's character and acting ability was the only flaw with this movie.

!!!!!!!HERE BE SPOILERS!!!!!!!

It'd have been better (and more disturbing) if we liked or even sympathized with her character, making Mikey's killing her all that more important.

As it stood, she was merely a loose end to be tied, and one that I wasn't at all sad to see go.

On the other hand, I think Mo'Nique did an excellent job in this movie opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt. SO unexpected!

reply

i agree.. i hate her as a singer, but i really think she was great in this movie

i thought it was funny how Clayton met Macy Gray's character Neisha at the gate of his house because she wanted to know what happened to his wife Vicki (Neisha's best friend), and Neisha was like "well i'm going to go now" because she realized that he probably killed his wife and he was going to kill her too if she didn't leave his house. then later stephen dorff's character has her killed anyways!
