Rose and Mikey in the garden with the gun?

**MAJOR SPOILER ON NEXT LINE ***

When Mikey kills Rose in the garden, I'm assuming she wanted him to kill her to put her out of her pain? Based on the last things she told him "Do whatever she tells you" it seemed like she was making her final arrangements and at some point before that (offscreen), she had asked him to kill her.

I was wondering the same thing as well. The ending of that scene is so unexpected that I didn't know what to think of it. Since it was intercut with the flashback of Mikey's Dad's beating him and Rose eventually killing the Dad, my immediate thought was that Mikey killed Rose as revenge, for having killed his Dad. But on further thought I too think that she asked him to kill her to put her out of her misery, and he chose to do it the way he did to make her death as painfree and happy as possible. I had forgotten about the "Do whatever she tells you" comment, but like you say that was most probably the signal to Mikey to do the deed.

I think that she had asked mikey to kill her because she was in so much pain. If you can remember when mikey goes out to kill macy's character, he comes back and he walks over the baby and then vickie makes like a disappionted sound or something. He picks up the baby and hands him to her. Then, he asks if rose is in bed and she says yes and he goes up stairs. Well, he dances for her and then he trows her his tie and coat. Look when he motions for her to come over. She has difficulty getting up. He dances for her to make her at leats forget about being sick. She is in so much pain that she realizes that she doesn't, i think, want to live like that anymore. So i guess that she wanted to die happy and that might have been the only way for her. When it goes into the flashback, i think that she saved him from pain. She stopped the pain for him and he had to do the same thing for her. When he goes to shoot her, try to watch her right hand, she kisses it and then puts her and to his head as if, she were kissing his head. Her telling him to do whatever vickie tells him to do is probablly because she will not be there to tell him what he should/needs to do.

When I first saw Mikey and Rose having s%x I couldn't figure that one out. Then I assumed it was because both of them lived such a secluded life that was the only way they would get any. Or maybe it was to get her mind of her pain.

It was still weird. It gave me the willies even though they weren't related. It seemed like he was having sex with his Mom. Maybe because she was his step-mom at some point in the past. :O

This was probably the best scene in the movie, and maybe the most beautiful, (not because I'm a sadist) because you would least expect it at that time and in that scenery and because, in the end, in proves to be such a speechless gesture.

She was terminal and wanted to go out with her dignity...what's so hard to understand about that?

And to do it with the love of your life giving you the greatest gift at the same time?

That was unconditional love people, he respected her wishes and bared his soul....

I found it profoundly moving and touching

Why is euthanasia so unacceptable? Who wants to end up a vegetable pissing and *beep* themselves and leaving loved ones with an image of an insane shell of someone we love?

I thought it took immense courage to make the decision to go ahead and leave before she had gotten to that point, and for him to respect that and understand

After all, they were experts in dealing with death

This is beautifully said, Gothmommy. I read it exactly the same way. If I were dying and knew I was going to end up in terrible pain and disability, that's exactly the way I'd want to go, though I could never put my lover through such an experience.

Still, this was the most beautiful scene in the movie, the whole thing, and for me, really made the film. I know it disturbed a lot of people, being so raw, but of course, this is why I loved it!

Thank you Miranda :)

I agree I could never ask someone to do that for me, but I think in the end their love was to the point they knew what they needed without having to say it

I was so intrigued by this movie, the storyline, the eclectic group of actors, the direction, everything...

And IMO Cuba's acting was Oscar worthy

If that's why he killed her it makes sense...I think the OP was saying he/she didn't know WHY Mikey killed Rose. I didn't get it myself....the reason behind the murder (or euthanasia, if you wanna call it that) was NOT obvious.

The reason I keep coming back to imdb.com is comments like yours Gothmommy ...u rule.

She was in pain and wanted to die that's why he killed her, it's not so difficult to figure out.

It was agreed upon, as he put the gun to her head she kissed her hand and touched his head. Also in the next scene after he buried her Vanessa Ferlito's Character sees Cuba returning the spade and asks him if Rose is gone; so even she knew.

At first I thought the same thing that he wanted to put her out of her misery, but then I was replaying back scenes in my head about when she asked him if he was mad at her? He said yes. Then they started having sex. The flashbacks made me interpret that Mikey's father took his anger out towards him because he didn't want him grieving over his mother because of guilt. In the very beginning of the movie, Mikey's mother asked his dad who is she? I'm thinking that was Rose. Mikey's father was cheating with Rose. Mikey's father used to beat the hell out of his mother. So fast forwarding to the scene where Mikey flash back to his father beating him, then Rose comes in and shoot him, I'm thinking that there is a reason why Mikey said to Rose that he was mad at her. This might be wrong but, I kind of got the feeling that Mikey blames Rose for bringing him into that 'life' of assassins. He also blames her for being the one that broke up his parents' relationship. Yes, he loved Rose, but he can still have those grudges against her. And also, at the end of the movie, when he was talking to the boy, he seemed as if he didn't want that same life for him. When the boy said, "We'll just kill them all" or something like that, the look on Mikey's face was like in agony because he didn't want that boy to know of or be of the assassin world. Maybe he blamed Rose for bringing him into the assassin world himself.
