What are your favorite German movies so far in 2003 and 2004?

Here are mine:

1. “Sophiiiie!” (IMDB: 7.5. My vote: 10)
2. “Gegen die Wand” (IMDB: 8.3. My vote: 10)
3. „Der Untergang“ (IMDB: 9.2. My vote: 9)
4. „Sommersturm“ (IMDB: 8.6. My vote: 9)
5. „Good bye, Lenin“ (IMDB: 8.0. My vote: 9)
6. “Ganz und gar” (IMDB: 7.9. My vote: 8)
7. “Liegen lernen” (IMDB: 7.1. My vote: 8)
8. „Muxmäuschenstill“ (IMDB: 7.7. My vote: 8)
9. “Eierdiebe” (IMDB: 7.9. My vote: 8)
10. “Kleinruppin Forever” (IMDB: 7.2. My vote: 7)

Please note that the IMDB rating listed above is the much fairer arithmetic mean, not the pointless so-called “weigthed average” (not sure which morons are responsible for weighing that). Also: I posted the same message on the boards of all my Top-10 movies.

I’d be glad if some of you could find the time to reply since I’m really curious about your preferences!

Hopefully I didn’t forget too many other good German flicks...

Then you should go to the theater more often - most of them are!

Best of 2004:

1. Schultze gets the Blues (8)
2. Der Untergang (7)
3. Gegen die Wand (7)
4. Müxmäuschenstill (7)
5. Kroko (7)

Quite a few pretty interesting movies from germany this year, worst mvies this year were "Pura Vida Ibiza" (2) and "Traumschiff Suprise" (3).

I definitely agree regarding "Pura Vida Ibiza". What a terrible piece of crap. However, "TS" in my opinion still deserves between five or six stars since the effects and the set design were pretty damn impressive for such a "cheap" (by international standards) movie.

reply

"Traumschiff Surprise", after my opinion, was okay for entertainement, but to close to "Der Schuh des Manitu", to be a surprise or very funny, and at least, you must be a fan of "Bully" Herbig´s TV-show! Havin fun with popcorn and Coke, not more, but not less

"Pura Vida Ibiza"... sorry, the title itself show, how stupid this movie is, also like "Mädchen Mädchen 2", or in the past "Harte Jungs" and "Knallharte Jungs"!

For the guy who told, there were no german movies worth to see in the past, there are many movies, which were great, since secobnd past of the 90th. Like "14 Tage lebenslänglich", "Knockin on heaven´s door" "Aimée & Jaguar", "Das Experiment", "Der Untergang", "Anatomie I" ( I do also like II, but with this I am standing a little bit alone ) "Babij Jar" ( as german belorussian co-production )or "Der Brief des Kosmonauten"!

German cinema is famous for good movies, but also for horrible craps!

"Good bye Lenin" is overrated by far ( after my opinion ), "Rosenstrasse" utter crap... also like ( sorry ) "Muxmäuschenstill"

And, germans could be very strong in high quality TV-movies, ( but 90% produced and showed on the public and not the private channels )

reply

I haven't seen many German movies lately (hmm... maybe should watch more), but amongst them I can only recall Muxmäuschenstill (10) and Das Experiment (9-10), which both were great. Anatomie and Knockin on Heavens Door for example were only ok to me.

reply

"Knockin on heaven´s door" was well done, much better than "Männerpension"! Also "Bandits" was just average!
One problem of german cinema is ( like american ) that if one movie succed, a lot´s of movies of the same style are following, like "Der bewegte Mann" ( okay ) than "Stadtgespräch" ( boring ) "Abgeschminkt" ( okay ) "Küss mich" ( crap )!!

Also "Anatomie" was good for me ( also II ) but just to follow the american Teenie-Horror-wave! Also to make a sequel reminds to Hollywood tradition.

Why dont you just write in deutscher sprache, since nobody from out of germany
cares if the movie is just released in deutschland oder zumindest wenn ihr

I like austrian movies more than german, there are for example: Funny Games, Komm süßer Tod, Silentium, Poppitz and so on, all excellent

reply

Austrian movies? Nah, not really. "Funny Games" and "Silentium" are pretty good indeed but other than that they suck (at least those that I saw).
