different form the book and the uncle

why is this movie so much different in the book? all I know is that in the book the uncle was a sweet loving kind-hearted man who loved maria and Robin had a crush on her and was Loveday's son. Also why did they change the uncle into a mean cold-hearted cruel character and always pushes Maria away?
