Why didn't they help her? (SPOILER)

I really liked this movie but one thing about the ending really bothered me.
When Maria jumped in the water, why didn't anyone go after her?
They all stood there doing nothing while she was seemingly drowning.

Since they built up that nice story with her and Robin, I was kind of expecting him to save her, since a De Noir sacrificing for a Merryweather would be like the ultimate thing.
Also it seemed like they were going that way, but as soon as Robin played out his part helping her, he became completely useless.

I would have loved seeing them end up together. They would be a sweet pair, don't you think?

I think because they realized that a fall that high would probably kill them and that she would be ok because of the pearls.
