Big Surprises..

Who knew Natalie Cole could belt out the blues like that? To me, that was the happy surprise of the movie.. the entire movie was thrilling to me, but to see her stand up and wail - WOW.

India.Arie covering Strange Fruit was also an unexpected treat. What an amazing song, and she stayed pretty true to Lady Day.

Finally, Macy Grey's version of Hound Dog - considering that she looked totally out of it at the rehearsal, and quite possibly didn't have a clue about Big Mama's version (which I am sure isn't true, but with the miracle of careful editing..) totally kicked @$$.

True - but Clarence Gatemouth Brown's "Okie Dokie Stomp" was a really pleasant surprise, an almost 80 year old with magic fingers standing up on the stage - a great loss to the blues following the 2005 N.O. floods.

Another one of the guitar maestros Hubert Sumlin was fantastic too - and not long after having a lung removed.

Vernon Reid's incredible rhythm work on "Voodoo Chile". He's playing rhythm and burning it down all at the same time.

I can`t agree. Macy Gray was an embarrassment.

Promise her anything, but give her a Pez!
