Did it annoy anyone else how...*SPOILERS*

...Malarie didn't seem at all bothered by the fact she was sleeping with her half brother and was pregnant with his child? She just seemed totally unfazed when she found out they were related.

I liked this film a lot, but this was something that bothered me.

"I told him once that I don't like jelly. I don't trust the way it moves."

the way i look at the ending bit here is like this: elvis the whole way through the movie has pressured her into having sex with him. she's kind of gotten stockholm syndrome in a really minor way and says she loves him, but you could see this as some kind of reaction to her family and her brother in particular being almost ...i dunno if the right word is oppressive?... but still, she says she loves him. by the end she is so in shock that this just seems like another bombshell to do with elvis, especially after she got pregnant she seemed to get very, not unfazed as you said, but she just seemed to be in shock.

there is something that bothers me about her death but i cant quite work it out. i might have to watch it again.

I think she was in pure shock.

I loved the film though and it kept my attention. It wasn't the best movie but I enjoyed it.

THE END

reply

I enjoyed the movie myself. I know some will disagree with me but I think on some level he did care for her. I hated his killing her and her mother at the end though.

reply

I don't think he cared for her at all. His purpose for coming to town was completely singular...to get revenge on the father who abandoned him. He showed very typical psychopathic tendencies--mainly flat affect (no emotion) when sleeping with his sister and murdering her, his brother, and his 'step mother.' That's my opinion anyway.

As a side note, the acting was very good. GGB gave me goosebumps with his creepiness!

reply

I think it was more than getting revenge on the father. If that were the case, there would have been an inkling that he was going to finish the job of killing the entire family at the end of the movie when he stands before him and says something to the effect of, "I need to get right with God."

I think he just wanted to be a part of that family/connect with his father by any means necessary--not excusing his definitely psychopathic actions but giving another view.

uhh, did you miss the end of the movie? she goes practically catatonic, says shes going to hell, then spills the beans to her mom...i think you need to watch it again.

reply

Personally, I think he killed Malerie and her mom because she told her mom everything that had happened (their relationship and Paul's death). He didn't want his Dad to find out, so he killed them. I think the whole movie was all about him getting accepted by his dad. His eyes lit up more when his father accepted him into his house and his son's bedroom, he seemed to love that more than Malerie. He went to the church get to get forgiveness from God, and perhaps his father.

That's how I saw it, and what I took from it.

reply

My sentiments exactly.

From the time she finds out she continues to develop more and more guilt over the situation, until she tells her mother resulting in the movie's conclusion which I personally loved.

i was annoyed by how STUPID malerie was in general...she learned that elvis killed her brother and all she asked was "do you love me???"

My perspective:(SPOILERS)

Elvis original goal was to create a relationship with his father, a bond.He arrived and saw wife, a son and a daughter, that gave him mixed feelings of anger, opression, sadness, depression, which fed his violent nature. He saw his original goal being threated, so he began a plan, a vendetta, and the worst type of them, an emotional one, he wanted his father to feel what he has felt, to make his nice little family go through his pain.He began by killing the son, the boy who was fulfilling his role as the son.He got involved with his half-sister to re-create his childhood, he was probably going to dump the child. All to make his father suffer.But.....he changed along the way, he didnt want to cause damage any longer. He felt the only way to prevent the damage he was about to cause, would be by killing. So, he killed the wife and his half-sister.In the end scene, he goes after his father, theres no one else anymore, they can work on their broken relationship, after all, this is all that Elvis wanted. The last line indicates the desire Elvis has for beginning anew and changing his ways.Who knows, he might even follow dad´s footsteps and work for the church.

Malerie did not have close relationship with Paul who liked to bully her so I can understand her reaction to Elvis killing him.
