Inu yasha's father/ tenseiga/ why no save himself?

If the tenseiga can bring people back to life & has helped Sessh. survive, why didn't the 'great dog demon' use it to save himself? I have yet to find an answer to this one.

The trouble was that Tenseiga can't heal the living; it can only bring back the dead. While the sword apparently has enough of a will of its own to choose to protect Sesshoumaru, apparently it didn't exert itself to do the same for Inu no Taisho, and he either didn't know it could, could not make it do so, or for some reason chose not to.

Which is odd really when Inu no Taisho respected the sword and all Sesshoumaru did and sometimes still does is reject the sword and call it useless, yet it chooses to help him more.

The Tenseiga choose not to protect Inu no Taisho because he already has the Tetsusaiga as protection. Maybe the cost of wielding the Tetsusaiga diminishes the protective power of the Tenseiga.

Or maybe it tried to protect him and did to some extent, but it just wasn't strong enough to save him from an enemy as fearsome as Ryuukotsusei.
