The woman who was hit by a train

Does anyone know anything about this case?
What was her name?
Where did this incident take place?

reply

Wasn't that about the most disturbing thing you've ever seen? I kind of wish I hadn't watched this tape because that image is freakin hard to shake.

Okay, I finally did some research and found out her name and her story.
Her name was Mary. T. Wojtyla and she was distracted by her divorce. She had three small children at home.

i know how you feel, i watched the footage from the accident on the set of "Twilight Zone: The Movie" last week and I'm still traumatized by it. I spent a good two hours reading about the case, and when I saw a link to the video (which apparently aired on a NEWS show that interviewed Landis after he was acquitted!) I didn't realize I was actually going to be watching IT. Of course, I couldn't take my eyes away.

anyways, Sleater-Kinney wrote a song about that woman after that footage appeared everywhere. It's on their excellent record "All Hands on the Bad One."
Here are the lyrics:

WAS IT A LIE?

The yard was cold and dark
the tracks were clearly marked
But she was tired--she didn't see
She was just out alone
She wasn't going home
she was going somewhere far away

the train was moving through
as we know the world has to do
Everyone will say it was her fault
Somewhere a camera is placed
inside this awful place
the accident is about to start

was it a lie?
did it fill your head
did it entertain?
Will you feel alive
at the end of it?

When the collision came
she died right away
her body flung almost sixty feet
and as she split in two
was she coming straight for you
and do you have a camera for a face?
was she your TV show
Was she your video

A woman's pain never private,
always seen
I want to close my eyes
I want to cut the wires
I want a day not made for you to see

was it a lie?
did it fill your head
did it entertain?
Will you feel alive
at the end of it?

When you play it back to me
it feels more like a parody
And that's all I will ever be
it's all i will ever be
i really don't care about it
i dont care if it's cold
I really want to be the prettiest wreck
you've seen
(You broadcast it in 50 states
looped her death on the internet
and a woman's life got cheaper that day
a woman's life got cheaper that day)

Yeah, Poor Mary.
A lot of people felt bad for her especially her children.

One guy believes that it was all planned as written here.

I didn't know that train incident was all that well known or that it inspired a song. Fitting though because it's an extremely unsettling image; like being slapped in the face with the fact that life is fleeting and can be taken away at any given time. I haven't seen the Twilight Zone footage, but I doubt I will. I am interested in learning more about the case and the lawsuit, though.

I recently watched a documentary called "The Bridge," about Golden Gate Bridge "jumpers." I can't decide how I feel about it...the director filmed the bridge for one year (2004, during which there were 24 suicides.) So some of the suicides are caught on film. Apparently, any time they thought they had a "jumper," they notified authorities, and apparently stopped a number of suicides throughout the year. The documentary also includes accounts from family members and witnesses, talking about how the person behaved, their mental illness, etc etc. The thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that a few of the suicides are filmed with a handheld camera, following the person from when they jump until they hit the water. Anyways, interesting, but VERY emotionally manipulative doc.

here's a link to a comprehensive article on the Twilight Zone accident, though it seems slightly skewed. Still, it's probably the best on the net.

Ack! I don't know if I can watch 'The Bridge' or not. That stuff seems like it stays in my head forever and depresses me. I guess I'll put it on my queue in case I'm in the mood for it.

Thanks for the link. I'm interested in reading more about this. Surprised I haven't already since Jennifer Jason Leigh is one of my favorite actresses.

The bridge was awesome.

It's a very crazy documentary. The main guy they focus on the whole time.... when he finally jumps at the end its very creepy feeling.

It's like the most perfect swan dive ever but you know hes going to die.. like death but freedom or something.... a very heavy documentary..

On topic: my cousin and myself watched banned from tv on 2 hits of elephants on parade acid, and a 8th of shrooms when it first came out....

what the hell is wrong with us...

It is indeed a disturbing image. I wonder why they didn't give more details on her in this footage? They don't even say she died.

"The Twilight Zone" footage is indeed disturbing, as is "The Bridge." I take no pleasure in watching these films, yet I am curious.

That's the only part I remember from the commercial.

I'm glad Obama won, but I will not jump on the Pro-Choice bandwagon
