Rick Mercer used to be funny.

He was the best on 22 minutes by far and it's like he got 100 years old as soon as he moved to his own show. A typical episode he gives bad monologue jokes that remind me of Mike Bullard then he does something like goes and plays hockey with a hockey team and makes bad jokes and pretends to get hit in the head by a puck or something. What happend to Rick Mercer? And he must be nailing that Darren guy no way would he get on tv if that wasn't the case, no I'm not kidding. Darren was on The Buzz with Mista Mo, remember that horrible excuse for tv? Mercer is not near so bad as Air Farce or The Buzz but he is only about 10% as good as he was on 22 Minutes and 22 Minutes is not the same without him. The new news desk people they have there aren't as good. Greg Thomey was awesome and so was Rick Mercer.

i really like him on 22 minutes. i thought he was really good, like his rant. i still like to watch the rick mercer report but he is a little too cocky.

reply

The old shows were aired not long ago and those were way funnier. These isn't appealing and he does look so old. It's only been a few years so maybe the stress of not being as popular has aged him.

First, let me just say that I think the only reason 22 Minutes SEEMS worse is because we all expect it to be like it used to, when Mr. Mercer was on board. The dynamic is different now, so much so that I like to think of it as a different identity all in itself. I mean, the new news desk people, though not as experienced in the world of comedy, are very talented actors, and the show can still kill me laughing if I'm not busy remembering what it used to be like. Especially in election time - The campaigning Conservative carolers? The parody of the Liberal campaign ads? It was magnificently written stuff.

As for Rick Mercer, I still find his work hilarious, while remaining intellectually stimulating. I can see how some, who appreciated his work on 22 Minutes, may not enjoy the structure of his new show, or its tendency to digress into the occasionally "dumb joke", but personally, I find there are so few of them that it doesn't bother me. After all, when compared to other programs on television (which are filled up entirely with stupid jokes) his show is rather refreshing.

Off topic, but somebody here may know - do you remember during campaign time recently, both 22 Minutes and Rick Mercer's Report did a parody on the Liberal campaign ads? Well, one of the two did one that featured the woman's voice and characteristic background, saying "Stephen Harper owns a dragon. Seriously. We can't lie about this"... can anybody tell me which show it was?

It was the Mercer Report. I saw it during our weekly Rick Mercer day in Social Studies class.

I don't think it is the structure that is wrong, I don't expect this show to be 22 Minutes I just measure what is funny and what isn't funny (to me) and I don't think Monday Report is funny. Hopefully it improves but I think the jokes are quite lame. CBC definitely needs to yank Air Farce though, no hope for it to get any better.

Imo, Rick Mercer's show just isn't cutting edge. And yes the structure is all wrong. Is there anyone really interested in what an obscure group of teenage yokels from Espanola is doing for their prep rally Friday night? Really? There are too many shows in which he spends too much time making lame chit chat with people of zero notoriety. The jokes are also too "tame" and "generic", like this show is made for the older crowd.

I agree with you guys that the show isn't funny but it has nothing to do with This Hour Has 22 Minutes. It's a completely different show. I just go by what I think is funny or not funny and this show just isn't funny to me.

reply

I use that measurement too we all can only judge by our own likes and dislikes.

reply

I just have to say that I really enjoy the Rick Mercer Report.
I find it funny and entertaining.
He's witty.

I think the problem with the Rick Mercer report is that it isn't funny, edgy or informative. Why would anyone want to watch him talk to students or look at bears or read not-at-all-funny fake headlines in front of a captive studio audience?

reply

This is exactly what I like. I guess everyone has different tastes. This is why I love this show.

who is Rich Mercer?

"A typical episode he gives bad monologue jokes that remind me of Mike Bullard"

but Rick Mercer is actually funny

I agree that Rick Mercer used to be funny but I have watched his new show and am disappointed every time. It's like it should be funny but Rick Mercer doesn't care enough or isn't willing to attack as much as he used to. It's disappointing because he was so good on This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

I agree with everyone saying that the Rick Mercer Report is just not funny. In my opinion, the main problem is that Mercer is no longer a political satirist, he's just another boring Canadian stand-up comedian whose entire routine consists of predictable, inoffensive "aw, shucks!" ribbing of Canadian culture. I think he has gotten too comfortable with being a mainstream Canadian celebrity, whose interviews are now welcomed by politicians as a chance to boost their own popularity, that he's afraid to say anything even remotely edgy to them that might threaten his future access.

Just compare the gentle treatment he gives our politicians now to what Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are saying about theirs, or even to what he was saying about Canadian politics back in the 1990s. And I mean, our political situation right now is so dismal (just look at the two main party leaders) that churning out a political satire show should be like shooting fish in a barrel!

I agree, I see no point for this show to exist, it's not funny.

reply

I guess it exists for all the intelligent people out there.
