Ebert Gives 4 ****?!? Should I Rent This?...

The general consensus here seems that this flick SUCKS. Ebert (who I agree with about 70% of the time) raved - absolutely raved - about it, from plot to acting, writing to directing. Did he just screw up as he sometimes does? I mean 4 stars? Not much ambivalence there.

I saw the trailer for this on another DVD and it DID look interesting. I like N.Campbell, and think Toback is a pretty good writer.

I hate renting movies and wasting time watching them, or stopping part way through wishing I hadn't wasted my time. Advice?

No, definitively not. Don't rent it for your own good. I don't know what was Neve Campbell thinking when she made this film (and I don't know what was I thinking when I decided to watch this thing).

The scenes are too slooooow, dialogues sucks, useless premises, plot remarkably similar in basis to "Indecent Proposal" but with an odd ending.

I guess the director (trying to be innovative) lose himself in the plot.

One word to describe it best, AWFUL...

Jorgeotero 2000,

Thanks for the feedback! I have so many movies on a must see list, and being able to eliminate even one is comforting. I'lll take your advice and pass.

I watched this movie based on Ebert's recommendation and was completely aghast. I found this film insufferable. For the life of me I cannot imagine what Ebert saw in it to give it a good review, let alone 4 stars. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

see it for youself and make your own opinion.

I think someone could have given Ebert $100,000 to plug it. Either that or he was completely high, or sleepwalking. Those are about the only feasible explanations.

What is even more bizarre is that 2 Girls and a Guy is quite good. This P.O.S. ranks in the 5 worst movies I've ever seen.

It's on the Independent Film Channel... no need to rent.

This movie starring Neve Campbell is not "Scream", so most of that crowd is not going to like this movie. It is an interesting character study, and Campbell is very unlike any character she's ever played.

I agree with Ebert. The movie is different, but I found it visually appealing, and the classical music that dominated the soundtrack was very appropriate.

As someone stated, they do play it on the Independent Film Channel, so you can occasionally catch it there.

Definitely not 4 star material, but Neve is very good in her role. There are sections that play weakly, many involving Frederick Weller. The scene with the rappers was utterly incoherent, and the scene with Dominic Chianese just before Weller makes the 'proposal' to Campbell in her apartment was also badly done.

Yet I wanted to see it play out, and Campbell is very alluring as she matures.

Ebert loves Toback. He appears heavily talking about Toback's work in a documentary about the making of the film (which was also fairly indulgent and boring), but star studded. For example, in the documentary Toback talks about how he thinks that Mike Tyson is one of the best actors in Hollywood. <cough>

"When Will I Be Loved" is on IFC because they were the only studio interested in buying/distributing it. Toback does have moments of brilliance, but "When Will I Be Loved" isn't necessarily one of them.

Ebert was way off mark with his rating. There is no character development. I was surprised that Neve Campbell, who was a prude about screen nudity up to that point , chose to break her duck in a meaningless and slightly gratuitous way.

Ebert also loves Neve Campbell. So do I. He thought she should have gotten an Oscar nomination for the role. But IMHO the movie itself left a lot to be desired. I hated the opening scene where Weller's character and an ex-girlfriend have a yelling contest in the middle of Times Square (or what appeared to be Times Square) for what seemed to be 10 minutes. That's a long time in a movie. I don't know much about Toback, but a lot of scenes seemed to be just thrown in because that's all he could think of, and his "job interview" with Campbell's character was creepy, IMHO. In fact, he IS creepy.

That said, I thought the only redeeming scene was the negotiation between Campbell and Chianese -- I thought it was riveting, and showed what Campbell is really capable of, which is a lot more than she'd shown up to then.

I wouldn't have given it 4 stars. Should you rent it? If you're a Neve fan, it's a definite must see, otherwise...

Ebert gives it a max score review, and alot of people don't like it.

Here's the tie breaker (and it works for everything): if you're curious about of interested in the movie, check it out. If not, don't...

I haven't seen it, yet (I've really just heard about it today), but saw the documentary on it and alot of the director's other movies, and I want to check it out. But that's just me...

honestly and to be blunt i rented this just to see neve campbell naked cause someone on imdb said neve did do nudity and i wanted to see her naked... in that regard she does not disappoint. neve is a great actress and she plays her character vera very well her love/make out/sex scenes are great.

so if your looking for a great drama this isn't it... its a dramatic porno nothing more nothing less.. with an indecent proposal type twist only in this case not only does she make a million dollars but she sets up her boyfriend to take a fall so she can keep the money all to herself and move on with her life insted of being part of her schemeing con-artist b/f's plans
