Am I the only one who thinks that this is a masterpiece?

What an underrated movie. It is so beautiful, mysterious, suspensful and amazing. The acting is top notch, the time period is so well recreated and the adaption is amazing. I've read the book and this is up there among the best book adaptations I've seen.

Plus, you have Alan Rickman and Dustin Hoffman, this is a great extra.

No, I agree with you. What a tragic story of genius, his pursuit to capture smells and his dark side. I could see this as a Shakespearean tale.

Wonderful picture, especially with John Hurt narrating

I agree. Great story perfectly told. Every shot is delicious, John Hurt’s sardonic narration is gorgeous, the pacing is perfect, the fable like story with a dark wit is pitched perfectly. It’s mysterious, profound, twisted, utterly compelling.

I can’t believe it’s 15 years old already, nobody is making films of this quality any more. Hoffman and Rickman have supporting roles and show exactly how it’s done.

Where the hell have great filmmakers like Tom Tykwer gone??

The cinematography alone was genius. So beautifully and artfully shot, it felt like a French film in more than just location. They really played into the Romanticism of the time, so much so that it was almost like it was written by Dumas, (he wrote the 3 musketeers but also the lesser known Black Tulip which is what this film reminded me of.)

I would say it's even beyond that, and one of the greatest movies ever made. The screenplay, acting, cinematography and directing all come together to make an absolutely perfect film.

That sounds like a typical Hollywood cop-out which would completely destroy the whole movie.

I loved this movie. Yes a masterpiece!!!

I also like the German TV 2018 one called Perfume or Parfum. Similar.

The time period was not well recreated at all. This is a dark-fantasy version of the 18th century that has about as much to do with reality as Batman films have with the modern era.
