Biggest Plot hole..

No one else seems to have noticed this, so perhaps I'm missing something, but, Vin Diesel got the Dad killed in the start!
So wouldn't it be illogical for them to assign him to protecting the rest of the family in the first place, look how well that went with the dad!

And even having said that, the wife does not display even the slightest bit of resentment toward him for this, and neither do the kids.

Wtf..

I'm not sure they told the family he was the one who was guarding the dad. I don't remember them ever saying it to the family or mentioning it at all.

Couple thoughts on that idea: First, the family wouldn't have been told of the details surrounding the death of the father, it would have been classified. Second, The CO was possibly attempting to help rebuild Wolfe's confidence by letting him protect the family. Finally, the CO could have also been thinking that putting Wolfe on the family would help him in the end thinking the issue of "getting the dad killed" would cause Wolfe to fold and thereby make it easier for the CO to move in and take what he wanted.

Don't forget the father showed Shane how to use the device in the field revealing the children's names that showed that the father trusted him so they had a bond. CO was hoping to use that bond.

You forgot that the CO was a traitor. He knew that Shane trusted him completely and would be easy to manipulate because of his naive, by-the-book military code of honor and blind loyalty to his country and his superiors. That made Shane the perfect sucker for the role. The CO set him up for the botched rescue so it was logical to choose him again. And why should the widow hold him responsible? After all, it's not like he abandoned her husband. He took a bullet trying to save the man and spent two months recovering.
