Did Rose and Gracie seem kind of 'sheltered'?

I thought it kind of odd that Gracie and Rose flip out so badly when they go to the youth facility. I mean, just because they can't sleep in the same room?
And to freak out just because you're in a room (alone please, safe!) with the lights on all night?!
I'd think it'd be a little scary yes, but these are kids who supposedly lived in very tough neighborhoods their entire lives!
That, and I thought the kids all looked very healthy and decently dressed for a mother that supposedly rarely had food in the place, or gave them any money.
I do NOT argue that Rowena was a horrific mom, but these things always made me wonder.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

They had just been taken away from the rest of their family and separated from each other. They were being locked up like they were in prison. I would be pissed off if someone was trying to keep me away from my sister. I also think part of it was the thought of being split up permanently, after what had just happened they would want to keep an eye out for one another. You would want to make sure nothing else happened. Living in a tough neighborhood is one thing, having people physically pull you away from your sibling is another. Gracie had no problem getting in a fight with those girls at the facility and I'm sure it wasn't the first time she had to fight. They were used to moving around a lot without necessarily the getting caught part. As for the looking nice and being decently dressed- I think that is something they would automatically do. You want to look good in High School and not give away that you don't have a lot of money. Sometimes the kids with less really strive to look the best so you would never know they were worse off especially the girls. It's not exactly like Gracie and Rose were in overly amazing clothes in the movie though.

I know I’m a little late but I just had to reply. I understand what you’re saying but if that part really happened then I’m thinking that something might have happen to that girl for them to act like that. It’s highly likely that at least one of those children have been sexually abused considering the fact that the mom brought home guy after guy after guy that she barely knew. And Gracie was always their protector so I think that’s why they may have reacted the way they did. And as far as the way that the kids were dressed was decent but not too good for them to be poor. It’s not like they were wearing Gucci or Roc-A-Wear outfits. Some poor people take good care of their stuff cuz that’s all they have. Just sayin’!
