Hmm...the good with the bad. That's how I see this opening weekend so far.
First...the film received a pretty good review in the ARIZONA REPUBLIC by Bill Muller...who I usually don't agree with. The best highlight is:
If I'm going to pick a Mormon film from the DVD shelf, I'm looking for Dutcher's name on the case.
This shows that Dutcher is really starting to appeal to more mainstream audiences.
Second...I went to see the 6:35 showing in Chandler, and took my wife and brother, who recently was baptized. Only 7 others were in the theatre with us.
WHAT IS GOING ON PEOPLE?! Is this the same city the packs the house for THE R.M. and SINGLES WARD? You piled in for GOD'S ARMY for weeks, and similarly for BRIGHAM CITY!
This is the trend in LDS Film. Every movie is getting less and less of an audience. almost EVERYONE says, "I'll wait to see it on DVD."
NEWS FLASH people!!! If you don't go see it in the theatres, there WILL NOT be anymore films made. Period. Video sales alone DO NOT and WILL NEVER be enough for SERIOUS directors, actors, and screenwriters to produce QUALITY motion pictures. Straight to video pretty much means straight to the garbage dump.
If you want QUALITY LDS films, we all need to step up and go the theatre and support the film. I've done so twice now. I'll do it at least a third time to pick up the slack. This is just really, really sad.
I'm sure I sound rather angry...but I am more disappointed. Really, really disappointed.
