a whole new level of boredom

So disappointed in this film. A waste of the usually excellent Rip Torn. A Russian actress, Dina Korzun, sleepwalks through the film, without a change of facial expression. Two men are supposed to be in love with her, but it's a mystery why anyone would spend more than five minutes on her.
A snore!

I agree with you there. Very disappointing, and trailer made it look like it might've been quite intriguing!!...I can't imagine what made the panel at Sundance award the Jury Prize to this film, for Drama...what drama? I found there was no emotional depth to the characters and the plot lacked any kind of tension, drama or resolution. But to be fair, I didn't stay until the end for fear of death through boredom.

I agree, honestly one of the worst films I've ever seen. It just didn't involve me on any level...and yes I left before the end (but then again I would, I was sitting next to you :D).

What a waste of time. Seriously, filmmakers need to get off this ridiculous notion that sappy, boring "love" films with stupid endings are entertaining. Rip Torn looked drugged up when he was acting and the rest of the cast was UNINSPIRED. If you want to see a nice film about a love triangle go see WILBUR WANTS TO KILL HIMSELF.

thanks very much for the thread.. a waste of my afternoon.. will never get those hours back... ever!

That's too bad, the end was the best part. You might have gotten something out of the film if you had waited.

ROFL @ the topic title

It was okay, could have been a lot better. Rip Torn was good.

I agree with all these posts.

My biggest rant would have to be about this so-called Russian "actress" who wouldn't know how to act her way out of a paper bag! My GOD, she was horrible! True, she never moved a muscle in her face. She never spoke realistically, and she never showed ANY emotion whatsoever. I thought her face and hair only so-so ---- the long-deceased Audrey Hepburn has NOTHING to worry about, and neither has the very much alive Julia Roberts! Her long, stringy, clingy blonde hair, her impassive face --- oh dear. O.K. She's slender. That's the ONLY thing she has going for her!

I hope they take her back as a tour guide in Russia. However, I feel sorry for any tourists who encounter this living statue!

Rip Torn did his usual excellent job. Jeez... She can't even apparently learn from an old pro when given the chance!!!!

Laura's character is not supposed to show emotion-- she is not in love with Alan, she's only there to live a better life. Of course she's going to act very weird and robotic, she is in a completely foreign environment both literally and emotionally. Do you see how much she stands out in contrast to all of the Memphis country-music-folk? She is a Russian woman who wound up in a completely wrong place, in a completely wrong relationship and the film is about her struggle to keep strong and raise her child in a better place than her home. She even explains in the film, "Russia and America are very different... In Russia we keep going. Americans are spoiled". She tries to stay together for this whole movie until the end when she finally breaks. That's the story, there is really no other way to portray Laura's character. I don't know what else you would have wanted this actress to do.

The scene at the end between Alan and Laura in the car is completely heart-wrenching. How can you call this woman emotionless!
