My Opinion

After watching this movie last night, I have come up with two opinions. One being that I think it is an original idea. Second however being that the idea wasn't given enough time. The two hours(I believe it was two) given left things being rushed and explained rather quickly in an annoying way. Also, the special effects were a good idea, but they either did not have a good budget or technology is just not ready for it. Either way, these are my opinions, noting of course that I had only seen it once and I really don't have much or a need or want to see it again unless someone were to convince me it is better the second time around, or I missed something.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the overall outcome of this movie sucked. The idea was good, I rather liked it. But the movie did seem rushed and there seemed very little proper story setup or development. I ranted for a while in my personal journal about this. I hate it when good ideas get poor implementations. Here's what I wrote in my personal journal, as a way of sharing my thoughts on it. Feel free to comment, but keep in mind that my journal entry is almost purely stream of consciousness.

I'm sitting here watching Darklight, a Sci-Fi Pictures Original movie. The preview looked like it would be good, but watching this I'm sure that it's utter crap. The story is rushed, the action scenes mal-choreographed, the music is even badly written. it's as if the person who dreamed it up said "eh, it's enough that i've got a cool idea. we don't need to put any further effort into it." so stupid. there are portions of the story where things happen too conveniently. like the protagonists getting captured and trying to fight their way out. suddenly, out of nowhere a swat team appears to corner them. but wait! some guy who's the commander of the team stops them, takes a look at the lapel pin on Richard Burgi's character's jacket and asks if he's with the Faith (the team Burgi's character works for). He then lets them go, cuz the Faith helped him out so long ago.
Um, excuse me? where's the logic in that? or creative process? a grand lack of it is more like it. i am willing to bet i could have written a better story, and i'm most definitely an amateur writer. and what sucks worse is that they managed to get some well known actors to play parts. what is so hard about properly writing and producing a work, and if it doesn't turn out properly then to not produce it? why put crap on tv and in movie theatres? there's no point.
this is just too easy to rant on. even the easy death of the antagonist, John de Lancie's character. and guess what, his antidote was then in such easy reach.
and why do they always wait so late to start firing once the enemy's in sight? do they wanna die or something? this movie really is a classic example of lower crust B movies.
overinflections of statements, poor dialogue. more than obvious usage of CG and even shortage of that usage where it was critical that CG be used. it's like they wanted to really use this all too cool rendering to create fantastical looking demons, but hired monkeys to do the work. either do it right or don't do it at all. and the main actress' transitions between her human self and her Darklight or demonic self are also lackluster.
Mind you, Shiri Appleby nor Richard Burgi nor John de Lancie are bad actors. (Btw, i dare you to most definitely argue John de Lancie being a bad actor) So why do they misuse their potential, or not use their full potential?
I could rant on this for hours, seriously. I've seen better made-for-tv B movies. Running Delilah was better than this, and that to me is saying something. Not to say I didn't enjoy Running Delilah. But i'll admit it was low budget. The story was better, i'll guarantee that.
They left the movie open for the possibility for a series. If they do a series, they need to do a better job than the obvious rush job they did here. if they can do better, and show it, they'll have a watcher in me. otherwise i'm never touching this again.

I agree with pretty much everything that you've said. I think that only real thing that I thought was cool was the black airbrushing that was done...and that was about it.
